Simon Rex is shining a light on his short-lived experience working on What I Like About You. "If I'm being totally honest, I remember I was visiting family in North Carolina or in Virginia - I forget where I was - and the writer/producer, one of them, called me and they're like, 'Hey Simon, we just want you to know in these next few episodes you're gonna be in it less. But don't worry, we're not writing you off the show,'" Rex, 51, exclusively shared with Us Weekly while promoting his new movie Operation Taco Gary's. "I remember thinking, 'F***, they're writing me off the show.' And I just knew it, and they basically said it." When the WB sitcom premiered in September 2002, Rex was able to collaborate with costars Amanda Bynes and his onscreen love interest, Jennie Garth, throughout the first season. After season 1, however, Rex was absent from the TV series. 'What I Like About You' Cast: Where Are They Now? "I don't know why. I guess they wanted to rotate different guys in every season for [my character] Jeff," Rex explained to Us. "I thought I did a good job. I was doing all these WB shows like Felicity and Jack & Jill. I had a holding deal with them, and they're putting me in all these shows. So I don't know what to attribute that to, but I was happy to do one year." Rex is also happy to relive the show now that it's streaming on Netflix. Before appearing in his latest Indie movie, the actor had the opportunity to rewatch a few episodes of What I Like About You. "I'm proud of it, and it's funny," he shared. "I hadn't seen it in 20 years or more, and I watched a few of them at home, and I was like, I'm laughing out loud. It's so wholesome, and it's still funny." When asked if there has ever been chatter about a revival or reunion, Rex said he wasn't aware. Simon Rex Michelle Felix With the show now streaming on Netflix, however, he wouldn't be surprised if "people will want to revisit that." Until then, Rex is hoping to bring the laughs in his new movie, Operation Taco Gary's. The indie film tells the story of two brothers (Rex and Dustin Milligan) who embark on a cross-country road trip. Things quickly dissolve, however, when the pair become involved in a global conspiracy. "I think everybody who's reading this knows that one person - they're either in their family or in their friend group or they are the conspiracy theorist - and it's a fun character to explore," Rex told Us while serving Tacos 1986 as part of Smorgasburg LA at Row DTLA. "I got to be the conspiracy theorist in this. My brother, played by Dustin Milligan, is the grounded scientist. There's a lot of fun with that odd couple dynamic." Revisiting the Most Short-Lived TV Shows of All Time Rex hopes the project reminds moviegoers of comedy films that aren't being made as much as they once were. "I wanted to be a part of bringing that back," he said. "When I read the script, I just knew I laughed out loud on every page." Operation Taco Gary's is in theatres on Friday, February 27.
