[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content] A 56-year-old refugee, nearly blind and speaking little English, is dead in Buffalo after federal agents released him alone on a frigid winter night. And now, questions are swirling about how this ever happened - and whether it could have been prevented. Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a Rohingya refugee from Myanmar pictured (above), had already endured so much. He survived persecution in his home country as part of a Muslim minority that has faced violence so severe the United States has declared it a genocide, per CNN. And he came here seeking safety from that. But instead, his final days unfolded in confusion, isolation, and cold. As part of the routine process, the Erie County Sheriff's Office notified US Customs and Border Protection, which had placed an immigration detainer on him. Agents arrived before his release was finalized. But after reviewing his case, they determined he had lawfully entered the US as a refugee in late 2024 and was not eligible for removal under the policies of President Donald Trump's administration. But instead of deporting him, agents say they offered him what they described as a courtesy ride to a coffee shop near his last known address. The CBP said in a statement: "Border Patrol agents offered him a courtesy ride, which he chose to accept to a coffee shop, determined to be a warm, safe location near his last known address, rather than be released directly from the Border Patrol station. He showed no signs of distress, mobility issues or disabilities requiring special assistance." And then, five days later, Shah Alam was found dead about four miles from that coffee shop. According to the Buffalo Police Department, his body was discovered around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The department said: "Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances and timeframe of events leading up to his death, following his release from custody." WTF. The Erie County Medical Examiner later determined that his death was health-related. Exposure and homicide have been ruled out. Still, officials and family members are demanding answers about the decisions that led to him being alone that night. Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan did not mince words, saying: "A vulnerable man - nearly blind and unable to speak English - was left alone on a cold winter night with no known attempt to leave him in a safe, secure location. That decision from US Customs and Border Protection was unprofessional and inhumane." New York Congressman Tim Kennedy called the death horrific and heartbreaking, adding: "The public and Mr. Alam's family deserve answers immediately." According to reporting from Reuters and CNN, Shah Alam's family says they were never told where he had been dropped off. His son explained that his father could not read, write, or use electronic devices, he had limited vision, he spoke little English, and he had simply wanted to return home, eat home-cooked food, and be reunited with his loved ones. Out on a walk and using a curtain rod as a walking stick, he became lost and wandered onto private property. When he did not comply with officers' commands - allegedly because he did not understand them - he was arrested. He then remained behind bars for months. Now, the Erie County District Attorney has said the charges will be dismissed upon receipt of his death certificate. There is something profoundly unsettling about all of this. A man who survived persecution abroad ends up alone on a winter night in a country he hoped would protect him. Even if his death was ultimately ruled health-related, the circumstances that led him to be wandering miles from where he was left demand scrutiny. It is, quite simply, heartbreaking.
