A 16-year-old boy in North Carolina was arrested after he allegedly killed a child and injured another minor by attacking them with a hammer and knife. Deputies in Wake County were called to a home near Fuquay-Varina on Monday, February 23, around 5:20 p.m. Upon their arrival, officials found a 12-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy who were seriously hurt after being attacked. Jackson Borrello was found nearby and taken into custody in connection to the crime, Us Weekly can confirm. Police confirmed that Borrello knew the two victims, while ABC 11 reported that the victims were his siblings. Both the boy and girl were transported to a hospital for treatment, where the girl later died from her injuries. The boy is currently still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 15-Year-Old Boy Charged With the Murder of 9-Year-Old Aria Thorpe Deputies said that more details will be released about the girl's death once the Chief Medical Examiner finishes their report. Borrello has been accused of attacking the children with a knife and hammer, according to arrest records viewed by WBTV. The suspect was charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury one day after the attack on Tuesday, February 24. He is being charged as an adult for the crime. Borrello was initially denied bond after his arraignment hearing took place at a hospital on Wednesday, February 25. It is not currently clear if he has entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman was asked why the arraignment did not take place at the Wake County Courthouse, though said she was "not at liberty" to discuss the reasoning "publicly." "There are times, though, when somebody has to be hospitalized or for other reasons, an individual cannot actually come to court for first appearance," Freeman said, per ABC 11. "In those situations, the law requires that we provide a first appearance and that will be done at a location with a judge and attorneys present." Freeman added that the case was concerning for all involved, as well as members of the Wake County community. "Like so many communities throughout the country, we have seen a real significant increase in violent crimes serious violent crime among our juvenile population," Freeman said. "This is something that is going to require just a really aggressive approach to handling. So many times in these situations, there are other underlying complicating issues, mental health issues, different things that might be going on." 15-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot by Teen Allegedly Waving Gun on New Year's Day Sheriff Willie Rowe also issued a statement about the attack. "On behalf of the entire Wake County Sheriff's Office, we offer our deepest condolences to the victims' loved ones, and we continue to keep them in our prayers," Rowe said in a statement obtained by Us. "There are no words to fully express the heartbreaking impact of this tragedy. We are grateful to our community members for their patience and support as we continue to investigate." Fuquay-Varina Middle School - where the 12-year-old was a student - reflected on the tragic situation in a message that went out to staff and families. "Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends . . . We will continue to have staff available at the school to assist our students in coping with this loss," the principal said, per ABC 11.
