A mother is accused of killing her 6-year-old daughter by stabbing her more than 20 times inside her Florida home, where they were both found "covered in blood," according to court documents. An investigation revealed April Oliva, 40, fatally attacked her daughter, Valerie, with a kitchen knife at their house in Milton, located in the Florida Panhandle, the evening of Tuesday, February 24, an arrest report obtained by Us Weekly says. That night, when Oliva's sister "received a disturbing phone call" from Oliva, she had her roommate call their father "while she stayed on the phone with April," the arrest report states. Oliva's sister reported Oliva "was not making much sense, making comments about evil spirits" and said "something bad happened," the report notes. Oliva's father arrived at Oliva's home after midnight on Wednesday, February 25, and went inside, where he found his daughter and Valerie "covered in blood" in the kitchen and noticed Valerie's body was "lifeless," according to the arrest report. When Santa Rosa County sheriff's deputies arrived, they found Oliva "in the kitchen laying on top of Valerie's body," the arrest report says. A knife was also found in the home's dining room, below a kitchen island, the arrest report says. "It was quickly determined Valerie was deceased and had sustained deep lacerations to her neck exposing tissue and bone," the arrest report states. Oliva was also injured by "lacerations to her neck and abdomen," according to the report. She was taken to a nearby hospital and asked for an attorney, the report says. It was not currently clear whether Oliva had retained an attorney as of Thursday, February 26. An arrest warrant charging Oliva with murder in connection with her daughter's death has been issued, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office said in a February 25 news release. At the time the release was issued, Oliva was being treated at a hospital, according to the agency. "The investigation remains active and ongoing," the sheriff's office said. "This is a deeply tragic case, and our thoughts are with all those affected." A deputy who responded to the crime scene said that they found Oliva's daughter with "a towel-like cloth on her body," which was covered by a kitchen rug, according to the arrest report. Valerie's father told authorities that he had been out of town during the alleged stabbing and had spoken with Oliva, his wife, that same evening around 7 p.m., according to the arrest report. He also said that no one else had been inside the home with Oliva and Valerie. A potential motive for the alleged stabbing is unclear. The sheriff's office said that "additional information will be released as it becomes available."
