New York City's Finest are on the hunt for four suspected snowball hurlers following an incident in Washington Square Park that was filmed - and has since gone viral. A massive snowball fight that was organized online for the afternoon of Monday, February 23, in the Greenwich Village park just a stone's throw from New York University. When members of the NYPD arrived to disperse the large crowd, the snowball fight's participants turned on two of the cops, pelting them with snowballs as well as chunks of ice. "It was very disturbing," Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry commented. "This was an attack on two New York City police officers." The NYPD has released images of two of the people they claim actually injured the officers during the frosty melee. The two suspects, according to a statement, are wanted for assault on a police officer." The statement said that "two uniformed police officers were inside Washington Square Park when two individuals intentionally struck the officers multiple times with snow and ice." Mayor Zohran Mamdani does not agree with Hendry's assessment. Children's Basketball Coach, Her Dad Attacked Other Coach, His Wife During Game "From the videos I have seen, it looks like a snowball fight," Mamdani said at a press conference about a different matter on Tuesday, February 24. The footage shows the two cowering officers being smothered in the white stuff, with snow being flung from all sides. The police can be seen running from the barrage of ice and snowballs. "They were surrounded by a group which they described as mainly adults who were blocking both entrances [to] the park," Hendry said. "It's just a snowball fight, no. This was ice chunks that were smashed on a police officer's head." Hendry said members of the crush also hit the officers with rocks. "The individuals who did this need to be identified, captured, arrested and then prosecuted by our Manhattan [district attorney's] office," Hendry insisted. Police said that the officers had to be treated at the hospital for head, face and neck injuries. According to Hendry, the officers are still dealing with pain and headaches. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the footage "disgraceful" and "criminal." They also ask that anyone with any information about any of the other snowball fighters reach out. "Anyone with information is asked to contact @NYPDTips or 800-577-TIPS," reads the brief statement. Mamdani, 35, said criminal charges are not the proper response. He instead suggested highlighting the treatment that all city employees deserve. "They and our entire city workforce deserve to be treated with respect," Mamdani said. Assaulting a police officer in New York City is a serious felony that carries severe penalties, including prison time. The crime is defined simply as whenever a "person intentionally causes physical injury to an officer performing official duties." Prosecutors tend to take aggressive approaches with such offenders, and the penalties for assaulting a police officer can include up to 7 years in prison for causing physical injury and up to 25 years if serious physical injury is inflicted.
