A dad in Las Vegas was killed by police earlier this month after he cradled his 3-year-old son in his arms before shooting the boy in the head during a fight with the child's mother. Raneka Pate called 911 around 1:18 a.m. on February 3 to report that Quinton Baker was holding her and their son, Kentre Baker, hostage. "He's not in his right mind," Pate said in a 911 call obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She went on to claim that he was "trying to take my son." Pate alleged that Baker assaulted a friend of hers and then "tried to kill" her after they got into an argument at their apartment, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the 911 call recordings. Pate said she tried to take Kentre out of the car, though Baker stopped her by shooting at her and her friend's vehicle, according to the Review-Journal reports. "A couple were out here screaming and arguing with each other," a witness told a dispatcher during a 911 call made around 1:29 a.m., per the outlet. "Eventually, a man came out with a gun and a kid," the witness continued. "He threw the kid in a blue Ford ... but before he peeled out of here, he took a shot at the white BMW with a gun." Police said that the parents had gotten into a fight that continued to escalate throughout the night, according to KSNV. However, it is not clear what the argument was about. Police said that Baker eventually returned to the apartment with Kentre and continued to fight with Pate. He then returned outside to confront police while holding the boy. "He's threatening to kill me and my son," Pate reportedly said in a second 911 call. "He literally beat me .... He's crazy. He's in the house with him." Police said that body camera footage showed Baker cradling and holding Kentre in his arms as he pointed a gun at him. "The child was struck in the head by a close contact gunshot wound when the suspect discharged his weapon," Clark County Assistant Sheriff Bryan Peterson said during a press conference on February 5. You won't have neither one of us." "That child was being held hostage, and the suspect's intent was clearly stated by him to the mother several times," Peterson added. "He was going to kill that child and then kill himself." Baker was ultimately shot to death by responding police officers after he opened fire on Kentre, while the officer also shot the boy once in the leg. However, Peterson said the coroner reported Kentre's death was caused by the shot fired by Baker. "In this situation, officers have milliseconds to make a decision," Peterson said during the press conference. "Their ultimate goal is to save that baby's life. That suspect chose those actions and followed through with what his intent was. He killed his son."
