by Spencer AlthouseBuzzFeedBuzzFeed StaffI'm the Editorial Director at BuzzFeed - where I've reported on TV, film, and lifestyle trends (primarily travel, fitness, and food) since 2013 - and I also post about the latest in pop culture news to my 850k+ followers on TikTok. I. Am. So. Confused. Let me explain. CBS Stephen Colbert has a segment on The Late Show called "The Colbert Questionert," where he asks A-listers a bunch of rapid-fire prompts, one of them being "what is the best sandwich?" Lady Gaga swears it's an Italian sub, Drew Barrymore's go-to is a tuna melt, Bad Bunny loves Puerto Rico's tripleta, and Ryan Gosling cleverly replied "ice cream." However, Jeff Daniels was recently a guest on the talk show, and his answer was so bizarre that millions of people were literally left baffled. CBS Jeff Daniels is an icon. He's a two-time Emmy winner and three-time Tony nominee. You probably know him from shows and movies like The Newsroom, Dumb & Dumber, and Speed. In less than 24 hours, the interview of Jeff explaining his go-to sandwich - which sounded like a concoction that Shaggy from Scooby-Doo would make after getting a litttttttle too high - had accrued 1.7 million views on TikTok. Since then, it's received almost 3 million views. So, for the sake of journalism, I decided to recreate and taste-test his exact sandwich for you here. Let's get started. Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed I'm no stranger to reviewing celebs' favorite meals. While in Italy, I ate the so-called best pizza in the world, according to Food Network's Giada De Laurentiis. I've also eaten the so-called best sandwich in the world (located in Manhattan), according to Gwyneth Paltrow. So, this time, I braved a New York City blizzard to shop for every ingredient in Jeff Daniels's homemade concoction. Jeff's bread of choice for his sandwich is a pita, but for some reason he doesn't layer the toppings inside its pocket. Instead, he simply places them on ~top~. Jeff didn't specify which kind of pita to get, so I opted for a "classic white" because it felt like the most traditional option for this type of sandwich. My store also had whole wheat, multigrain, and sweet onion, which I kind of regret not getting for myself. Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed The first topping is a quarter inch (!) of creamy peanut butter on only one half of the pita. I'm a huge fan of peanut butter, so I definitely didn't mind slathering this puppy up. I even pulled out a measuring tape to make sure I followed his directions perfectly. However, pita is already super dry and thick on its own, and a gallon-ish of creamy peanut butter was gonna make everything even more difficult to swallow, so my main concern was choking to death. Imagine that's how I die, because of a dumb BuzzFeed post. So embarrassing. Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed Anyway, the next topping is potato chips, specifically the Cheddar & Sour Cream flavor from Ruffles. This is easily one of my favorite chip flavors anyway, so Jeff hasn't ~completely~ lost me, but I truly had no idea how well this would pair with the peanut butter. Continuing with his instructions, Jeff said, "You're getting a handful of them and you're crunching them up and you're sprinkling them on the peanut butter." Easy enough! Here's what that looks like: Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed If I'm being honest, this sandwich didn't sound half bad so far. It was a little kooky, sure, but I'm always down to try new things. Unfortunately for me, there was still one more ingredient to add: barbecue sauce. At this point in the interview, Stephen Colbert and the entire audience gasped in unison. Colbert then asked for clarification on which brand of barbecue sauce, and Jeff insisted that anything works, but he prefers Sweet Baby Ray's. CBS I figured this would be the one and only time I'll ever eat this sandwich, so I got three different flavors of barbecue sauce to test out: two from Sweet Baby Ray's (their original and Sweet 'n Spicy), as well as Smash Kitchen's Hot Honey. (Wildly enough, that last one is actually made by Glen Powell's organic food company, so I guess I'm taste-testing a lot of celeb-inspired dishes today.) Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed After drizzling the sauce on top, the next steps are to fold the sandwich over, smush it together, and take a giant bite. Jeff promised that it's delicious, saying, "It's my three favorite tastes: peanut butter, that brand of potato chips, and the barbecue sauce. It's like visiting three countries at once, and they're all in your mouth." And then Colbert joked, "You're either eating that in a poncho or naked, I'm not sure. That is dangerous." Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed First up was the sandwich with the original barbecue sauce on top. And you know what?! Jeff Daniels was NOT wrong. Like, yes, that was a funky bite of food, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I didn't hate the sandwich. In fact, I actually kind of liked it! Spencer Althouse / BuzzFeed The peanut butter was obviously very thick,
