Sarah Drew broke her silence after she faced backlash for promoting a new show in the wake of former Grey's Anatomy costar Eric Dane's death. Drew, 45, took to Instagram on Friday, February 20, to celebrate season 3 of her Hallmark series Mistletoe Murders being renewed, writing, "Merry merry MISTLETOE MURDERS SEASON 3 babyyyyyyy!!! CANNOT WAIT!!!" A social media user took to the comments section to accuse Drew of being "tone deaf," to which she replied, "I imagine this comment is in reference to the news about Eric Dane, or the fall of our democracy, or people getting kidnapped and killed in the streets, or the atrocities of the Epstein files, or the deeply corrupt administration we are living under - or any of the other truly heartbreaking things that are happening at the same time - all the time." Drew stood by her decision to celebrate a personal accomplishment. 'Grey's Anatomy' Cast Reacts to Eric Dane's Death at Age 53 "I just want to encourage you- that many things can be true at the same time. I can grieve one thing and celebrate another. I can work and I can mother," she continued. "I'd ask you to offer a little bit of grace. We have to find our joy where it comes because joy is resistance. And this show and this community brings me so much joy, so I will celebrate that... while also grieving all of the other things I've mentioned." One day before Mistletoe Murders' renewal, Drew honored Dane after he died at age 53. "Heartbroken for this tremendous loss," she wrote via social media. "Eric was an incredible presence as an actor and as a human and he will be profoundly missed." News broke on Thursday, February 19, that Dane died after a battle with ALS, which is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and has no cure. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world," read a statement from Dane's loved ones. "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always." Every Time Eric Dane Had Been Candid About ALS and Other Health Struggles The statement concluded: "Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time." Dane originally went public with his diagnosis less than a year prior. "I have been diagnosed with ALS," he said in an April 2025 statement. "I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time." The actor booked roles on Countdown, Kabul and an episode of Brilliant Minds ahead of his death.
