Everyone in America has their own grievances with health insurance and how confusing and ridiculous it can be, and that frustration doesn't count out celebrities, either. The Grey's Anatomy star's death is still weighing heavy on our minds. His loved ones, especially his teens Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, and wife Rebecca Gayheart, are suffering a tremendous and heartbreaking loss. It's absolutely devastating to hear how much this poor family has suffered - and their health insurance policy did NOTHING to soften the blow. In her essay for The Cut published in December 2025, Eric's estranged wife talked about his diagnosis with ALS - a disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to move and function, while the mind often remains painfully aware of what's happening. Just a few short months before his death and amid his battle with this condition, Rebecca shared her grievances on how Eric's healthcare policy kept denying his treatments and care. She wrote: "Just figuring out the health-care system is its own thing - the health-insurance company will deny you what you're asking for and you have to appeal and then you have to apply again." Related: Eric's Pals Launch GoFundMe To 'Support' His Daughters After His Passing Far, far too many people know that struggle. She even detailed a moment where a health insurance worker got sassy with her: "The woman from his insurance said to me, 'You can keep applying, and I'll keep denying,' I was like, 'Oh? F that.' I made it my mission. I was 'locked in,' as the kids would say. I crashed out, and then I locked it in." Seriously, WTF?? What on earth do these insurance companies think they're doing? People pay their hard-earned money in this difficult economy, relying on health coverage to help them get the care they desperately need. And even with TONS of money out of pocket, it seems like insurance companies just want to fight with you about it. In the end, it leaves everyone thinking just why the eff they're paying so much for this policy to not help when they need it most! In a serious battle like ALS and other related conditions, that have no cure, it would seem like insurance companies would know how crucial coverage is... And, at the very least, care to be decent, compassionate, respectful human beings while dealing with someone going through a heartbreaking situation. But sadly, it doesn't seem like that's always the case. Sigh. Ultimately, the actress said it took multiple appeals to finally get her hubby's "24/7" care approved - and even then, she still had to do a lot of work herself or ask friends for help in caring for Eric. That's such a shame. Families going through health challenges like this shouldn't need to deal with these added stresses. Challenges like this are also why there are often GoFundMe pages set up after a celebrity's death. While it may seem like they live lavish lives, not everyone no longer has to worry about money woes, especially after expensive health needs like this. A fundraiser was set up for the Dane family. See HERE. We're sure you've got your own stories about how insurance has screwed you over, just like poor Rebecca and Eric. Let us know your thoughts (below).
