Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman is sharing an update on Nick Reiner's case. "This case is a death penalty eligible case. Along those lines, we take the process in which we determine whether or not the death penalty should be sought extremely seriously and it goes through a very rigorous process," Hochman, 62, told reporters outside of court on Monday, February 23. "We will be looking at all aggravating and mitigating circumstances and we have invited defense counsel to present to us both in writing or orally in a meeting any arguments they'd like to make in consideration for going forward or not going forward with the death penalty. That is an ongoing process." Hochman's claims were made shortly after Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances in the deaths of his parents Rob and Michele Singer Reiner. Nick also waived his right to a speedy trial, which means his next court date will be April 29. Rob Reiner and Wife Michele's Deaths: Everything to Know About the Case "The case is on track," Hochman added. "We have provided the bulk of discovery to the defense counsel and we are now waiting for the coroner's report." (Reiner's attorney did not speak with reporters after the hearing.) Rob and Michele were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14, 2025. Nick was arrested hours later and faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted of their murders. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined Rob and Michele's cause of death to be "multiple sharp force injuries," ruling the manner as homicide. Nathan Hochman Patrick T. Fallon / AFP Nick first appeared in court on December 17, 2025, at which time his then-lawyer, Alan Jackson, claimed it was "too early" for Nick to enter a plea. When Nick returned to the courtroom on January 7, his arraignment was postponed after Jackson stepped down as his attorney. Kimberly Greene was subsequently appointed to represent Nick. Inside Rob, Michele Reiner's Final Days Before Son's Arrest for Their Deaths "I spoke to Mr. Reiner briefly this morning," Greene told reporters at the time. "He was understanding that there was going to be a change in counsel." She added, "We haven't had any in-depth conversations," before clarifying her initial interaction with Nick lasted approximately 30 seconds. Greene also revealed that she had not spoken with the Reiner family, noting, "I don't think they were aware that this was going on." In a statement to Us Weekly at the time, Los Angeles County public defender Ricardo Garcia said, "The Public Defender's Office recognizes what an unimaginable tragedy this is for the Reiner family and the Los Angeles community. Our hearts go out to the Reiner family as they navigate this difficult time. We ask for your patience and compassion as the case moves through the legal process, as these matters are complicated and require careful consideration." Rob Reiner Family Guide: Wife Michele and 4 Kids, Including Tracy and Nick As for why Jackson withdrew from the case, the attorney has remained tight-lipped about his reason. "Circumstances beyond our control, but more importantly, circumstances beyond Nick's control, have dictated that, sadly, it's made it impossible for us to continue our representation of Nick," Jackson told the press after Nick's January hearing. "I'm legally and I'm ethically prohibited from explaining all the reasons why, I know that's a question on everyone's mind." Jackson insisted that he and his team remained "deeply committed" to Nick and his "best interests." "In fact, we know, we're not just convinced, we know that the legal process will reveal the true facts of the circumstances surrounding Nick's case," he added. "What we've learned, and you can take this to the bank, is that, pursuant to the law in California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder."
