Conan O'Brien broke his silence on the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. Their youngest son, Nick, was arrested two days later and charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances. While he didn't enter a plea at his January court appearance, his former lawyer said he is "not guilty of murder." Laura Cavanaugh / Getty Images "Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous," a source said. According to the Hollywood Reporter, after Nick interrupted a private conversation with Bill Hader, an argument erupted between him and his father over Nick's "asocial and unsettling behavior." Kevin Winter / Getty Images "Minutes later, the Reiners, mortified, apologized to O'Brien and left the party," the site reported. Hours later, their bodies were reportedly discovered after a massage therapist, unable to reach the couple, called their daughter, Romy, who then entered the property, found her father, and contacted police. Dominique Charriau / Getty Images "I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot," he said of their relationship. "My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so-they were just such lovely people." Variety / Getty Images Conan continued: "And to have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they're gone. . . . I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward. I mean, there's no other word for it." Nigel Waldron / Getty Images "It's just very-it's so awful," Conan added. "It's just so awful. And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there-and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend." Billie Weiss / Getty Images The couple's deaths also prompted an outpouring of tributes at the time, including from their celebrity friends. Jean-baptiste Lacroix / Getty Images Paul Walter Hauser said he was "sick to [his] stomach." "I hate that Rob and his wife are gone from this world, but they sure as hell impacted me and countless others while here," he added, naming his favorite films from Rob, including When Harry Met Sally, which was inspired by Rob's relationship with Michele. "I'm horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele," Stephen King wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me." You can read more tributes to Rob and Michele here. Comments
