Rebecca Gayheart had sadly been preparing for her estranged husband's death for a while. As we're sure you've heard, Eric Dane sadly passed away on Thursday. But two months ago, in a December 2025 essay for The Cut, Rebecca candidly wrote about how she and her family were preparing for his passing. After his diagnosis with ALS, the actor sadly deteriorated fast... But she stayed strong and helped their kids Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, deal with the then-upcoming tragedy. She said at the time: "I try to stay in the moment, even though there's no escaping thinking about the future. I worry so much about my girls losing their father - they're going through this while experiencing all the pressures that are put on young girls, and I want to do everything in my power to give them the tools they'll need." Later in the essay, she said she and Eric decided they "wanted to have complete transparency and honesty with them," so they discussed his diagnosis with their girls. We've had a family therapist who we've been working with since we separated, but I sought out professional help targeted toward teenage girls because it's such a formative time in their lives - they're trying to individuate while they're having to deal with this really huge loss and anticipatory grief. And she said, 'The kids will let you know; they'll stop asking questions when they can't handle it anymore, when it's too much information'." It's tough losing a parent at any age, but being a young teen is so tough as it is... So sad. The parents also made the step, per Rebecca, to let the two teens speak with Eric's doctor themselves: "We wanted to give [our children] the opportunity to speak with [Dane's] doctor, because they had a lot of questions that at that point I couldn't answer, and I don't even know if Eric could answer them. They've talked to her, and they know that she's available at all times." Such a brave and tough decision to make. We can't imagine what they're all going through right now. Our heart continues to be with Rebecca, Billie, and Georgia. May Eric rest in peace.
