The parents of a West Virginia boy who was sent to school with cockroaches in his backpack and bug bites covering his body have been arrested on child neglect charges, according to authorities and news reports. Dwayne and Dorothy Hickman's son and daughter have since been removed from their Doddridge County home, where authorities found "deplorable living conditions," according to the Doddridge County Sheriff's Office, WDTV reported, citing court documents. The investigation into the couple started on February 10, when a staff member at a local preschool, the Doddridge County Early Learning Academy, shared their concerns about two siblings attending the school, according to a criminal complaint obtained by WBOY. The school employee reported that one child had cockroaches inside his backpack and that they noticed bug bites on his "face, hands and bottom," the criminal complaint says, the TV station reported. The boy's sister told teachers her clothes were "very dirty" and asked them to wash her clothing, according to court filings, WDTV reported. Parents Arrested After Roaches Seen 'Crawling Over' Baby in Infested Home Following the report, deputies alerted Child Protective Services and accused Dwayne, 37, and Dorothy, 29, of child neglect, according to authorities, WBOY reported. Child Protective Services visited the Hickmans' home as a result and took custody of their children, according to WBOY. The children's ages were not specified by law enforcement. The Hickmans are both charged with two counts of gross neglect of a child creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury, court records viewed by Us Weekly on Wednesday, February 18, show. They both pleaded not guilty to the charges on Friday, February 13, according to court records. Defense attorneys separately representing Dwayne and Dorothy did not immediately return requests for comment from Us. Dwayne and Dorothy's bonds were initially set at $20,000, court records show. Dorothy's bond amount was later reduced to $10,000. Dorothy was due in court for a preliminary hearing the morning of February 18, according to court records. Dwayne is due in court for a preliminary hearing on February 20. The couple is being detained at the North Central Regional Jail in Greenwood. Couple Arrested After Keeping Lice-Infested Foster Kids in Filthy Home Under West Virginia law, if a person is found guilty of child neglect that creates a risk of serious bodily injury or death, they could face 1 to 5 years in prison, as well as a potential maximum fine of $3,000, according to La Neve Law Offices, a firm based in Clarksburg. In another recent alleged child neglect case, a father and stepmother of an 11-year-old Indiana girl were arrested in relation to her death, according to authorities, Us previously reported. The girl was found dead at a house in Stilesville on Saturday, February 14, the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Her father, Kenneth Vazquez, 39, and her stepmother, Elba Vazquez, 35, are facing felony charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, according to the sheriff's office.
