James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly Van Der Beek renewed their vows days before the actor's death. "We decided two days beforehand and our friends got us new rings, filled our bedroom with flowers and candles and we renewed our vows from bed," Kimberly, 44, told People on Tuesday, February 17. Several friends and family members were present for the "simple and beautiful and moving" ceremony. Musician Poranguí was in attendance, playing "most beautiful music," including "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which concluded the ceremony. Phillip Faraone/Getty Images James and Kimberly wed in 2010 and share six kids: daughters Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, and Gwendolyn as well as sons Joshua and Jeremiah. News broke on Wednesday, February 11, that James died at age 48 after a lengthy cancer battle. "Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace," a statement shared via the actor's Instagram read. "There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend." The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to Us Weekly that the Dawson's Creek alum was pronounced dead at 6:44 a.m. on Wednesday. A medical professional called the examiner's office with the news. James was diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer in August 2023. He went public with his illness in November 2024. "I've been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family," he told People in a statement at the time. "There's reason for optimism, and I'm feeling good." What James Van Der Beek's Wife Said About His Cancer Battle Before His Death A GoFundMe was started for James' family following his death. The fundraiser has since brought in more than $2.6 million. "In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James's medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds," the website reads. "They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead." Celebrities have been honoring James' memory with donations. Director Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, donated $25,000 to the family, while Zoe Saldaña set a recurring $2,500 donation monthly. "Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children's education," the GoFundMe description concluded. "Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them." Several celebrities have also defended the Van Der Beek family's decision to raise money using GoFundMe. Broadway actress Donna Vivino was quick to share "some facts" in a February 13 Instagram post. "They do not OWN the farm they live on, they were renting," she wrote. "He was not living off residuals."
