by Stephanie SoteriouBuzzFeedBuzzFeed Staff Anyone who grew up in the '00s is probably incredibly familiar with the reality show America's Next Top Model, which premiered in 2003 and ran for 24 seasons. But in case you missed it, it basically follows a bunch of aspiring models who compete against each other in a series of challenges to win a lucrative modeling contract. Cbs Photo Archive / Getty Images It's fair to say that ANTM hasn't exactly aged well over the last 23 years, with controversial clips from the show often resurfacing on social media to huge backlash. From shocking photo shoot themes, including race-swapping, to how the contestants were treated, the entire series has faced serious scrutiny. The CW And all of that scrutiny comes to a head in the Netflix documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, which premiered on Monday. The three-part series breaks down the show's biggest controversies, with former contestants as well as Tyra and her fellow judges returning to share their side of the story. Netflix / Via youtube.com Some of the content is genuinely shocking, but one thing that viewers did not anticipate was the sad health update from one of the original beloved judges on the show, J. Alexander, also known as Miss. J. Netflix J joined the show in Season 1 as a runway coach and judge, and fans immediately fell in love with his quick wit and the no-nonsense guidance that he offered the models. Paras Griffin / Getty Images In the final episode of the series, J shared a home video from his time in the hospital. Netflix To the camera, J, now 67, explained: "On December 27, 2022, I had a stroke. I woke up, I didn't know where I was other than in the hospital. I spent five weeks in a coma, and I couldn't walk, and I couldn't talk. I thought to myself: 'What was I going to do?' I couldn't walk, and I couldn't speak." Netflix "It was emotional, I cried," he went on. "I'm not ashamed to say that I cried." Netflix At the time of his stroke, Jay and Nigel went to visit J. Nigel explained: "I don't know whether he even wanted me to see him in that way. I was going to go and see him. It was just such a terrible shock, and really upsetting, and horrifying, and scary." Netflix "When he saw me, he was happy to see me, and the two of us cried together, and I held him," the British photographer went on. Netflix "I could feel how upset he was, for sure," Jay added of J. "I can only imagine where he was in his mind." Netflix The three men were also shown reuniting on the set of the docuseries, where Jay gently told his friend: "It has been such a journey, and you're speaking so much better now." Netflix "You are battling through, when we first saw you in that hospital you could hardly move, hardly talk, and now you're sitting up doing an interview, chatting, talking, rolling your eyes, making us laugh," Nigel said. "It's a long journey, but you're going to get there." Netflix J broke down in tears while speaking with Nigel and Jay, and was visibly emotional throughout the segment, saying to the camera: "I miss being the Queen of the Runway, the catwalks, of course. I'm the person who taught models how to walk. I taught models how to walk, and now I can't walk." Netflix "Not yet," he defiantly added. "Not yet. I'm determined to walk. I'm sure you're gonna see me again, I'm sure - it's not over for me yet." Netflix J was asked if Tyra had ever come to visit him, and J revealed: "No, not yet." He then added: "She just sent me, um, a text that she wants to come and visit... But, um, no. Not yet." Netflix He then lowered his head and pointedly looked over his glasses directly into the camera. Netflix You can watch the clip here:"I taught models how to walk. At this point, it's worth mentioning that J was brought onto ANTM in 2003 at Tyra's request as the pair were already longtime pals who'd been working together for years after they
