OMG. The Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, has been suffering a family heartbreak of his own amid the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie - and it's why he has a soft spot for the family, even as some have been accused of being involved! While speaking to DailyMail.com on Monday, Nanos revealed his very own brother died the day after Nancy was reported missing. That would be on Monday, February 2. As media descended on his community and the search for the 84-year-old intensified, he was grieving a loss of his own. Oof. We're very sorry for his loss. Related: Savannah Guthrie Shares Heartbreaking New Plea To Mom Nancy's Kidnapper Insisting it proves he has thick skin, the somewhat controversial Sheriff admitted it could be why he's so sensitive to allegations surfacing online that Nancy's son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, could be involved in her apparent kidnapping. He expressed: "People out there can get pretty ugly and mean and nasty and not have the facts. I tell my journalists, you guys need to be a little more responsible... because that's just really nasty stuff." He added that, at this time, "nobody" has been cleared, including workers, the subjects of two SWAT raids, and presumably the family, too. As for his personal connection to the Guthries, he said: "I stay in touch with them, mostly Savannah. I've not been in touch with Tommaso or Annie too much. I have talked to them a little bit, but I know the investigators are in touch with them." And while the police aren't ruling any possibilities out until Nancy is returned and they know exactly what happened, Chris doesn't want allegations floating around with no evidence - especially allegations that could harm the family. He explained: "But I've really told people, this is a lot of stress. If he [Tommaso Cioni] is guilty, if he's the one who did it, and we're able to prove that, then at that time jump on it but don't come out of nowhere with this." He continued: "I understand the pundits are out there. They're gonna say, well, he's the last one to see her alive. We understand that stuff. But, my goodness, you're putting a mark on somebody who could be completely innocent. And more important than that, he's family." Annie and Tommaso were two of the last people to see Nancy before she went missing. She was at their home for dinner on January 31st, and one of them dropped her off at her home afterward - but the reports of who drove her home have changed, with the police saying most recently it was just "family." On the change, he detailed: "We know who it is, but... when we saw everybody was attacking everybody and saying it's this we just thought, you know what? We'll say it was family." Makes it a little confusing for anyone following the case, but he's clearly trying to protect whoever it was. Hmm. Chris concluded by urging that the family has been "nothing but cooperative" during this investigation: "Everything we've asked for, they've given us. They're in such a state of grief. But they're also, you know, I think they're a little weary too, of what's been going on and being said about them." We bet. Those kinds of allegations are horrifying! FWIW, on Friday, the PCSD revealed that "DNA other than Nancy Guthrie's and those in close contact to her has been collected from the property" and is now being investigated to determine who it belongs to. So, that's a huge lead! We hope for more key discoveries like this to come in the near future! It's interesting to realize what Nanos has been going on behind the scenes. Makes you wonder if the added stress of his own grief is why he's also held back on conducting press conferences and interviews for much of this case?? Sounds like he's been going through a lot. The FBI has offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Nancy Guthrie, and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information or tips to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, 88-CRIME or tips.fbi.gov.
