A food influencer is now dead after she ate the most toxic crab in the Philippines. According to multiple outlets, 51-year-old content creator Emma Amit passed away in the hospital on February 6 - just two days after she filmed herself eating the Zosimus aeneus crab, known as the "Devil Crab." Related: James Van Der Beek's Dawson's Creek Mom Honors Him After Death iNaturalist states that the Zosimus aeneus crab is "potentially lethal due to the presence of the neurotoxins tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin in its flesh and shell," adding: "Z. aeneus is considered the most poisonous crab in the Philippines, with 50% of intoxication cases being fatal." Emma decided to take the risk and record herself eating the toxic crab, anyway. In the video, she hunted the crab, along with snails and shellfish, near her home in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, before cooking and eating one of them. Barangay Chief Laddy Gemang told Philippine news outlet ABS-CBN that Emma lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where she passed away. And she wasn't the only one. Her friend reportedly died after consuming the crab, too. Awful. ABS-CBN reported that when officials visited Emma's home, they found seven crab shells. Gemang warned residents in the area not to make the same mistake as the social media personality: "Be careful not to eat this devil crab because it is deadly. It is very dangerous to eat this type of crab because it can kill you in a matter of hours." Gemang also expressed that he's surprised by Emma's death since she and her husband were both experienced "fisherfolk," adding: "This is really saddening because they should have known. They live by the sea, so I know they know about this devil crab that's dangerous to eat. So why did she eat it? That is what I'm confused about." What a terrible tragedy. May Emma rest in peace...
