A man "intentionally" crashed his car into a group of youth baseball players and their parents while they were gathered outside a California grocery store trying to raise money for an impending team trip, according to authorities. Jonathan Maurer, 49, is charged with eight counts of attempted murder and several counts of assault with a deadly weapon with multiple sentencing enhancements in connection with the Saturday, February 7, crash in Truckee, according to the Nevada County District Attorney's Office. "The allegations that this act was intentional and directed at kids is hard to comprehend," Nevada County District Attorney Jesse Wilson said in a Tuesday, February 10, news release. Maurer, who is from Coalinga, is accused of crashing into the Tahoe Titans baseball team and their parents at the Safeway store the afternoon of February 7, according to authorities and the team's family members. Truckee police officers said in a news release issued that day that officers found four individuals, including children and adults, with "non-life-threatening injuries" as a result of the crash. The Tahoe Titans 12U team had been selling Tahoe Truckee Jerky to support a trip to Cooperstown All Star Village and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in upstate New York before the crash, according to a GoFundMe page created for the players and their families. The boys had raised $2,000 ahead of the collision, the GoFundMe page says. Drunk Driver Hits Mom, 5-Year-Old Walking Through Trader Joe's Parking Lot "Our hearts are heavy. This simply does not feel real. This is our small town. These are our kids," the page states, in part. It was not immediately clear why Maurer allegedly drove into the team on purpose, as police have not released a potential motive. He is represented by a public defender, whose name was not listed in court records viewed by Us Weekly the afternoon of Wednesday, February 11. Parents who spoke with KCRA-TV said that before the crash, Maurer was inside the Safeway store after he put out his cigarette on a sign that was being used by the youth baseball team. "We all noticed this man," one parent, Kristi Grant, told the TV station. "Everybody was so friendly, but this one was very out of place." Another parent, Jamie DeWit, told the TV station that "We were basically run down by someone that is obviously not mentally stable," adding "our poor boys are traumatized." One boy who was injured in the crash became unconscious following the collision and was "buried under debris," according to the Tahoe Titans' team manager, KCRA-TV reported. "The Tahoe Titans are more than a baseball team - they are brothers, friends, classmates, and part of this community," the GoFundMe page says. Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, according to the district attorney's office. "This incident has caused deep harm not only to those who were physically injured, but also to their families and to the broader Truckee community," the office said in a statement. Truckee is located in northern California, about a 15-mile drive northwest from Lake Tahoe.
