by Arsheen Kaur SahniBuzzFeedBuzzFeed Staff So, word on the internet street is that a three-part America's Next Top Model documentary, Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, is dropping on Netflix on February 16. And listen... that show was a lot. You know it, I know it, the entire early-2000s television era knows it. Arsheen Kaur Sahni / Via netflix.com For anyone who grew up dreaming about becoming a model and walking runways in slow motion, this show was both aspirational and terrifying. Tyra Banks was the blueprint... but the show itself? Whew, a different story altogether. The number of controversial and "did that really just happen?" moments still live rent-free in pop culture history. So, here are 10 of the most controversial and problematic moments from America's Next Top Model. 1. The time when Cassandra Whitehead refused the shorter pixie cut during ANTM Cycle 5 and chose to leave the competition. MsMoJO / Via youtube.com We need to stop saying Extreme Makeover was a segment on ANTM and start admitting that the entire show was just one long, traumatizing makeover with some photo shoots sprinkled in for flavor. In Cycle 5 (which is just ANTM lingo for 'season'), Tyra sniffed out Cassandra's pageant-girl attachment to her long hair and decided the only cure was a blonde pixie cut (which was actually supposed to be similar to Mia Farrow's in Rosemary's Baby). The absolute peak of the madness was when Jay Manuel tried to gaslight her into cutting another inch off, acting shocked when she finally said "no" and stood her ground. She ultimately chose to pull the plug and walk away, saying she needed to stay true to herself and wanted to walk away knowing she made the right choice for the long run. 2. How ANTM treated tooth gaps completely differently in Cycle 6 and Cycle 15. In Cycle 6, the judges basically treated Danielle's gap like a flaw she had to "fix" to be successful, giving her that classic passive-aggressive we're-only-saying-this-because-we-care routine. americas_nexttop_model / Via Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/reels/DKk0ywyTn__/ Danielle refused to bend and stood her ground, kept her smile exactly as it was, and still managed to walk away with the crown. But then, the show completely flipped the script in Cycle 15 with Chelsey, and asked her to actually WIDEN her gap at the dentist. Tsk tsk tsk. americas_nexttop_model / Via Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/reels/DKk0ywyTn__/ 3. Isis King's deeply uncomfortable experience as ANTM's first openly trans contestant in Cycle 11. Right from the first episode, the house was filled with people questioning her identity, and Tyra didn't really help by asking super invasive questions about her transition on national TV. DerikxHush / Via youtube.com When she officially came back as the show's first openly trans model, it was such a massive moment. There were a few bright spots, though. Seeing Analeigh Tipton, who is now a big-deal actor, just sit with Isis and bond with her while she did her hormone injections was so sweet and human. But then, literally in that same episode, another girl pushed Isis away in the pool JUST for being near her. 4. When Anna Bradfield's refusal to do the Cycle 2 nude shoot led to her early exit from the competition. ANTM fandom / Via antm.fandom.com To filter out anyone with an actual backbone, Tyra loved to spring a nude shoot on them, and in Cycle 2, she didn't even wait for the appetizers, dropping a "Garden of Eden" shoot right in Episode 1. The hilarious part to me is that it was supposed to be a contact lens commercial, but the final shots were so zoomed out you couldn't even see the models' eyes, let alone their lenses. When Anna Bradfield, a wife and mother, understandably wasn't vibing with the "body paint and naked stranger" aesthetic, Nigel Barker tried to smooth-talk her into it. But Anna wasn't buying what he was selling, and she stood her ground, which led to her being promptly kicked off the set. 5. They really did blackface in Cycles 4 and 13. Easily one of the most jaw-dropping challenges in ANTM history, Cycles 4 and 13 had the models "swap races" for a photo shoot, posing as different ethnicities than their own. And yes, it went exactly where you think it did, blackface and all. Jessica Kobeissi / Via youtube.com For a show led by Tyra Banks, someone who broke barriers as a Black supermodel, seeing racist behavior play out on it just makes the whole thing feel
