Salley Carson is coming to Southern Charm's Austen Kroll's defense, calling for more accountability from "The Viall Files" podcast after an awkward interview involving her costar and his family. "It honestly kinda broke my heart for him," Carson, 31, told SiriusXM's Page Six Radio on Tuesday, February 10, of watching Kroll's January appearance on "The Viall Files" podcast. "I called him and made sure he was OK. I'm like, 'I am so sorry, that must have been just really hard.'" Carson pointed out that the line of questioning about Kroll's late sister, Kyle, "came out of nowhere" and she "could tell" that Kroll, 38, was "uncomfortable." While Carson confirmed that Kroll is "good," and revealed that "The Viall Files" podcast cohosts Nick Viall and his wife, Natalie Joy, "both called him and apologized," she wanted more for her friend. "They definitely did apologize to Austen but I think that it needed to be a lot bigger than that." She then mused, "I'm kinda like, 'Are y'all not wanting to apologize because you don't really want to admit it was wrong?'" Carson's comments come after Joy, 27, put Kroll on the hot seat during his January 7 appearance on "The Viall Files" podcast, by bringing up his sister's death without any warning. "Going into your childhood, I didn't know this about your sister passing at 9," Joy said within the first 10 minutes of the show. "You obviously don't have to answer, but my question [is] how old were you when that happened?" Natalie Joy, Nick Viall. While the reality star has spoken about the death on Southern Charm, many fans - and his costars - were upset at how casually Joy brought up the topic and the fact that she didn't let it go. "I've been friends with him for a while and haven't asked [about Kyle]," Carson said on Tuesday. "That's something that I feel like he should bring up when he's comfortable." Kroll, for his part, did answer Joy's question at the time, saying he was just 7 years old when his sister died. Joy then asked how his family managed to survive that time frame, to which he replied, "Katie," referring to his younger sister, who was born after Kyle's passing. Southern Charm's Salley Claims Austen Almost Had Sex With Taylor Once "Katie came to our family and was the biggest blessing that the Kroll family could have ever gotten," Kroll shared. "Our story is very interesting because it's like, if my older sister, Kyle, were still here, then my younger sister, Katie, wouldn't be here. It was literally a cause and effect, and so it is very interesting because we look back, of course, with the fondest [memories] ... and [our] family cries together." Kroll remembered the time after Kyle died as the "dark ages" for him and his parents, but Katie brought the light back into their world. "Then, my youngest sister came around and ... was born and that quite literally was like our family rebirth," he continued. "We moved into a new house and it was, like, life could begin again." Joy continued her line of questioning, inquiring whether Kroll was present when Kyle fell and then saying, "What was this cliff?" 'Southern Charm' Recap: Salley Wants to Hook Up With Austen After Audrey Split The interview received backlash from listeners, many of whom pointed out how "cavalier" Joy was with her questions and how she allegedly showed "zero sensitivity" with her remarks. Kroll's costar Rodrigo Reyes agreed with fans' outrage over the conversation. He replied to a fan page's recap of the episode, calling Joy, "A POS," in the Instagram comments. Southern Charm alum Leva Bonaparte also showed support for Kroll, commenting on a @QueensofBravo's Instagram post calling for an apology from the podcast hosts. Austen Kroll's Dating History Includes 'Southern Charm' and Bravo Stars "They 10000% owe not just @krollthewarriorking an apology but his whole family. They are such lovely people. I'm in shock that one hasn't been issued yet," she wrote in the comments section. "I gasped when I heard it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is unwell. He may have taken it gracefully that's due to his character-it's wasn't OK." Reyes left a comment on the same Instagram post trolling Viall, 45, and Joy, writing, "Hey stop it everyone! They're too busy calling other people to clean up their mess to apologize. Have some compassion. 🤭." Joy and Viall - who are expecting twins and already share one child - have not publicly addressed the controversial interview but Us Weekly did reach out to their reps for comment.
