Four-time Tony nominee Raúl Esparza will star in the titular role, in his first time back on Broadway in more than 13 years. He will star alongside Joy Woods, recently nominated for her role in Gypsy, and Jeremy Kushnier. Danny Strong, who revamped the book for Chess on Broadway this season, wrote the book for the show. The musical features direction by Michael Mayer, also directing Chess this season, and an original score by Zoe Sarnak and Michael Weiner, with choreography by David Neumann. The show will begin preview performances Nov. 10 at the Shubert Theatre, taking over the space after the February closure of Hell's Kitchen, unless another tenant can squeeze in before then. The musical has set an opening date of Dec. 6. Amanda Lipitz, Henry Tisch and Jordan Roth, formerly the head of Jujamcyn Theaters and now creative director of ATG Entertainment, are producing. The musical comes to Broadway after making its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2024. Esparza returns to Broadway after playing roles such as Bobby in 2006 revival of Company, Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Philip Sallon in the Boy George musical Taboo in 2004. He was last on Broadway in the 2012 musical Leap of Faith, which closed after one month.
