Investigators in Houston, Texas, have arrested a 10-year-old boy for allegedly stabbing 13-year-old Riley Dearmas to death. The child suspect has been released to his family's custody while the Harris County District Attorney's Office said this week that it will make a charging decision, according to a statement from Houston Police. No charges had been filed in the case at the time of publication. The stabbing incident occurred on Wednesday, February 4, as part of a large fight that broke out in an apartment complex, Houston Police said. It was unclear how many people were involved in the deadly brawl. The boy's name has not been released due to his age. Around 8 p.m., officers were called to the apartment complex and subsequently rushed the girl to the hospital, where she later died, according to the statement. Investigators quickly determined the fatal stabbing stemmed from a physical altercation between two groups of individuals, a news release on the incident revealed. A singer," Ashley said, noting Riley would have turned 14 years old next month. "Instead of me celebrating her 14th birthday, I'm celebrating and trying to bury my daughter right now. These balloons could have been for her 14th birthday, not her death." Ashley told the station she spoke to police, who said that the 10-year-old turned himself in, and told them he stabbed Riley in self-defense. "There was no self-defense. My daughter was attacked," Ashley said. "She was not a violent person. She would never harm anyone intentionally," Ashley said. "The narrative that's going around right now about my daughter, that was not Riley." "She did not deserve it. She did not deserve to die," Ashley concluded.
