Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing criticism after he was spotted attending a local sporting event amid the ongoing search for Savannah Guthrie's missing mom, Nancy Guthrie. During a recent interview with Fox News, former homicide detective Ted Williams said he couldn't "cast an aspersion" on all of the local law enforcement working on the case, but he had concerns about Nanos after he was seen at an Arizona Wildcats game on Saturday, February 7. "This is one of the biggest cases that he's ever had and it's so significant and important, not only to this county, but also to the country," Williams said. "For him to be at a basketball game...I think it's an embarrassment." He continued, "His officials and authorities above him should call him in and ask, 'What the hell are you doing?' I'm very troubled by that." Nancy Guthrie's Alleged Kidnappers' Demands Revealed in Ransom Letter Social media users following the case had mixed opinions on Williams' comments. While some agreed the sheriff going to a basketball game during a major missing person case was bad optics, others pointed out that it was being investigated by both federal and local enforcement. Instagram/@savannahguthrie "The sheriff has people who work for/with him and it's absurd to expect him to work 24/7," one Instagram user wrote in the comments section of the Fox News interview. "My heart goes out to the Guthrie family, but if Jane Doe were missing and the sheriff took some time off, no one would say a word." As Us Weekly previously reported, Nancy, 84, has been missing for just over one week. She was last seen on January 31 after having dinner with her daughter Annie Guthrie. That night, Annie's husband, Tomasso Cioni, allegedly dropped his mother-in-law off at her Arizona home at 9:48 p.m. When she didn't show up for a church event the next morning, she was reported missing to police. In the wake of Nancy's mysterious disappearance, law enforcement has been hard at work as they continue the search. Authorities have also been investigating a number of ransom letters, including one demanding $6 million in bitcoin by Monday, February 9. At this time, it is unclear if the notes are legitimate or a hoax. Sheriff Nearly Breaks Down Discussing Search for Savannah Guthrie's Mom On Saturday, Nancy's children released an emotional video in which they attempted to send a message directly to the alleged kidnappers. "We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her," Savannah, who was seated between her siblings, Camron and Annie, said in the video. "This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay." That same night, authorities conducted another search of Annie's home. On Sunday, investigators were also seen at Nancy's Arizona property seemingly searching a septic tank that was located behind her house. The Pima County Sheriff's department has not confirmed if they found anything or what they were looking for at the time. There are currently no suspects or persons of interest in the case.
