Award-winning producer Harvey Weinstein's Hollywood empire crumbled in the wake of dozens of sexual assault allegations and multiple criminal prosecutions. A string of accusations about Weinstein's past conduct from actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Rosanna Arquette and Cara Delevingne, as well as numerous other figures from the entertainment industry, brought the #MeToo movement to a new level of visibility and helped usher in significant changes to Hollywood sets. Weinstein has always denied accusations of nonconsensual sex and other wrongdoing - though he was convicted of sexual assault in New York in 2020 and Los Angeles in 2022. Weinstein's initial conviction in New York was overturned on appeal in 2024, but he was later convicted of sexually assaulting Project Runway assistant Miriam Haley upon retrial. (The disgraced mogul was acquitted of another count related to accuser Kaja Sokola.) In his 2025 New York retrial, the jury was deadlocked on the alleged third-degree rape of actress Jessica Mann, setting up a third trial. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office plan to retry Weinstein in March 2026 over Mann's rape accusation. October 5, 2017 Harvey Weinstein confirmed he was taking a leave of absence from The Weinstein Company hours after The New York Times published a bombshell report detailing decades of sexual misconduct allegations against him. In the Times piece, Weinstein was accused of reaching financial settlements worth between $80,000 and $150,000 with at least eight women over the years. Among the alleged victims to go on the record was Ashley Judd, who accused Weinstein of conducting a business meeting in his hotel room while wearing a bathrobe. He allegedly asked if Judd wanted to watch him take a shower. "How do I get out of the room as fast as possible without alienating Harvey Weinstein?" Judd remembered thinking. Weinstein's then-lawyer Charles Harder dismissed the New York Times investigation as being "saturated with false and defamatory statements" about the executive. Yet, Weinstein confirmed in a statement that he was working with a group of therapists to "learn about myself" and "conquer my demons." "I came of age in the 60's and 70's, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different. That was the culture then," the Oscar winner said in October 2017. "I have since learned it's not an excuse, in the office - or out of it. To anyone. I realized some time ago that I needed to be a better person and my interactions with the people I work with have changed. I appreciate the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though I'm trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go. That is my commitment." October 8, 2017 Harvey Weinstein's brother, Bob Weinstein, announced that his sibling had been fired from The Weinstein Company amid the sexual harassment and assault allegations. "In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company - Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar - have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately," a company spokesperson told Us Weekly. October 10, 2017 The New Yorker published its own findings from Ronan Farrow's 10-month investigation, including new allegations of misconduct from Rosanna Arquette, Mira Sorvino, Asia Argento, Emma de Caunes and several of Harvey Weinstein's former employees. Multiple women alleged that they faced threats of retaliation and career repercussions if they refused Weinstein's sexual advances. Among the shocking accusations were Arquette alleging that Weinstein once grabbed her hand "and pulled it toward his penis" at The Beverly Hilton in the 1990s. Sorvino accused Weinstein of blacklisting her from movie roles when she rejected his advances. Weinstein's attorneys reiterated to Us Weekly that "allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied." "Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances," his rep said. "Mr. Weinstein obviously can't speak to anonymous allegations, but with respect to any women who have made allegations on the record, Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual. Mr. Weinstein has begun counseling, has listened to the community and is pursuing a better path. Mr. Weinstein is hoping that, if he makes enough progress, he will be given a second chance." October 10, 2017 Angelina Jolie alleged in an email to The New York Times that she had "a bad experience with Harvey Weinstein in my youth." "As a result, I chose never to work with him again and warn others
