Two weeks after former NFL player Kevin Johnson was killed, Los Angeles County detectives said that his death might be linked to at least three other murders of unhoused people in the same area that have taken place over the past four months. "Between October 2025 and January 2026, four homicides occurred in this area and remain under active investigation by the Homicide Bureau," the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said in a news release shared on Tuesday, February 3. "At this time, investigators are working to determine whether these cases are related." Johnson was found dead at the age of 55 at an encampment in the 1300 block of E. 120th Street in the unincorporated community of Willowbrook on January 21. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that the former athlete died from "blunt head trauma and stab wounds," according to CBS News. In the news release, detectives said that all four of the victims found in the area were unhoused people who were living in nearby encampments. Former Eagles Player Died of Head Trauma, Stab Wounds in Apparent Homicide One week after Johnson was killed, detectives reported back to the area where he died when they received a call about a man who was found deceased near the flood control channel. Despite confirming Johnson and one other person's death, police have not shared any additional information about the two other people who died in the months leading up to January. "Homicide investigators continue to pursue all investigative leads and remain committed to identifying the individual or individuals responsible for these crimes," the release stated. The news release added that Homicide Bureau investigators are working with the Century Sheriff's Station and the Operation Safe Streets Bureau while conducting the investigation. Additionally, the department is collaborating with the Community Partnerships Bureau, including the Mental Evaluation Team and the Homeless Outreach Services Team, as they work to determine what happened to the four victims. Police also asked that people with any information about the deaths contact the Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call "Crime Stoppers" at (800) 222-TIPS (8477), submit a tip through the "P3 Tips" app or use the Los Angeles Crime Stoppers website. Even through life's difficulties, he held happiness in his heart and shared it freely with those he loved," Brendan said. "My dad was selfless, loyal and deeply cherished. His absence leaves a huge void, but his love, laughter and spirit will live on through everyone whose life he touched." Meanwhile, some of Johnson's friends previously claimed to KABC-TV that the former athlete may have been suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) prior to his death. The brain disease is caused by repeated head injuries, and while many athletes suffer from it, CTE can only be diagnosed post-mortem.
