Maria Luiza Costa da Silva, who was known online as "Malu Costantine," was just 18, according to local media outlets, including g1 and MetrĂ³poles. Both reported that the deadly attack happened on Saturday, January 31. Maria's boyfriend, Gabryel Nascimento da Silva, allegedly spoke to investigators afterwards, and said that he and Maria were leaving a bar in Recife, Brazil, on Saturday when they ran into his ex, identified as Kallyne Santos da Silva. Gabryel and Maria had been attending a pre-Carnival event by Bloco do Papada staged inside the bar, the outlets reported. A Military Police arrest report that was obtained by g1 alleged that Gabryel told police that the three of them began arguing outside the bar. Suddenly, he said, Kallyne had a knife and started repeatedly stabbing Maria. Maria and Gabryel were transported to a local emergency room by a stranger who drove them in his car, according to reports. Maria is said to have died as medical professionals started working on her wounds. Gabryel was treated for his thigh injury and released from the hospital, authorities said. "Bloco do Papada reaffirms its commitment to a carnival of peace, respect, and responsibility," the statement added. "Acts of violence do not represent the values of the festival, nor the popular culture that we have defended for 10 years. We remain confident in the work of the authorities and reiterate the importance of carnival always being a space of joy, coexistence, and preservation of life."
