A man in Buda, Texas, was arrested after he got into a violent physical altercation with minors - most of them, girls - during a student protest against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a now-viral moment. Officers with the Buda Police Department identified Chad Michael Watts as the primary aggressor in a fight with a female minor that broke out during a walkout by hundreds at Hays Consolidated Independent School District on Monday, February 2. At the time, the students were protesting the actions of ICE across the United States. Watts, 45, has been charged with two counts of assault causing bodily injury, according to online records viewed by Us Weekly. He is being held on $6,000 bond and has not yet been released as of Wednesday, January 4. Both Watts and the girl initially involved in the altercation reported minor injuries, though they both declined medical evaluation. In the clip, Watts was seen outside his pickup truck as he pushed the female student backwards into a ditch. Several other students then came to her defense when Watts jumped on top of her and they began to shout and throw objects at Watts. He eventually got up off the ground and walked back to his truck - red hat in hand. It's not currently clear why the altercation between Watts and the students started. The Buda Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly's request for comment. It is not currently clear if Watts has retained legal representation or entered a plea. Following Watts' arrest, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said that the incident was a reminder that there is a clear power imbalance between adults and minors. "A full-grown adult on a young high school girl is a lot of power to overthrow, and so it took enough people around finally to get him off of her, and ultimately he went back into his truck and took off," Becerra said in a statement shared via Facebook. Becerra added that the Hays County District Attorney's Office is now investigating the situation. "No matter one's political views, an adult bears a clear responsibility to exercise restraint, especially in the presence of children," he said in a statement. Meanwhile, State Representative Erin Zwiener said that students in Central Texas are motivated to protect their community and loved ones amid the ongoing ICE arrests. 2 Illinois Men Arrested After Allegedly Trying to Kidnap Kentucky Teen "We know we have students in our schools who have had family members disappear. Of course, they are engaged. Of course, they're trying to protect their community," she said, according to CBS Austin. Zwiener added that she spoke to Texas Governor Greg Abbott in an attempt to reduce tensions, insisting that students should be allowed to exercise their right to protest. "I really want to call on Governor Abbott to help turn down the volume and instead of attacking these protesters, emphasize that it is everyone's right to speak their voice and no one should be harassing someone else for their political engagement," she said. Police are asking that anyone with relevant information regarding the case contact Hays County Dispatch at 512-393-7896 or Hays County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-32-TIPS.
