A man who had an estranged relationship with his wife allegedly killed her in a murder-suicide witnessed by the couple's two young children at their Florida home, according to authorities. The Bradford County Sheriff's Office received a "911 hang up call" about what authorities said was a fatal double shooting at a home in Starke the early morning of Thursday, January 29. There, deputies found Loyd Alan Kerr, 50, dead near the front of his home before locating Rachael Renee Kerr, 43, in the yard outside, according to two news releases issued by the sheriff's office that day. She was ultimately declared dead by first responders. "The preliminary investigation indicates this to be an ongoing domestic violence case between an estranged husband and wife," the sheriff's office initially said. Loyd is accused of killing Rachael that morning in front of their two children, ages 9 and 11, according to deputies, WJXT reported. Afterward, Bradford County Chief Deputy Brad Smith told the TV station that the father then "pointed a gun" at his children, "asked if they wanted to go to heaven with him, and they both begged him not to do it." His children, who authorities said were unharmed, raced to a neighbor's house. "It's a horrible, horrible thing to have to make them tell us a story and relive it," Smith told WJXT. "The children are very resilient, but there's going to be long-term psychological effects from this." In the immediate aftermath of Loyd and Rachael's deaths, the Florida Department of Children and Families took custody of them before placing them with family, according to the sheriff's office. The children, a brother and sister, are now being cared for by Rachael's brother, Nicholas Leidy, according to a GoFundMe page he established to support costs associated with their care and support. "Our family is walking through an incredibly painful and unexpected season after the sudden and tragic loss of my sister, Rachael," the GoFundMe page reads. According to deputies, Loyd had recently been released from the Clay County Jail ahead of January 29 and was prohibited from having contact with Rachael, WCJB-TV reported. He had been detained on domestic violence and stalking charges in connection with Rachael, deputies said, according to the TV station. Smith told the TV station that Rachael "was taking every precaution that she could, but [Loyd] was able to get into the house" on January 29. He added that "we're very discouraged" because deputies "just didn't get there in quite enough time," according to the TV station. In the GoFundMe page established by Rachael's brother, he wrote that he is "honored and committed to stepping in to provide" her children "with love, protection, and a stable home during this difficult transition." "While nothing can ever replace their mother, my heart and focus are on creating a safe, nurturing environment where they can begin to heal emotionally and continue growing surrounded by family and support," he added.
