Jason Bateman is making folks cringe after the latest episode of his podcast! Charli XCX appeared on the Smartless podcast on Monday, where the 57-year-old actor made things so incredibly awkward by grilling her about not wanting children. The conversation started when the pop star said she "miss[ed] out on a lot of conflict" growing up as an only child. Jason, who co-hosts the show with Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, then asked: "Does that mean you would love to have more than one kid, or would you like to have a kid that has the same sort of experience as you?" Related: Glambot Director FIRED After Controversy With Jennifer Lopez & Viral Email Drama! Well, that is a bit presumptuous to assume she even wants kids in the first place! And she doesn't! Charli replied: "I actually don't really want to have kids." Sean immediately chimed in to ask "why," before acknowledging that "it's none of [his] business." Charli didn't seem to mind answering at first, though. The Von dutch singer recognized her lack of desire to have children "could change" one day, but she agreed with Sean when he pointed out: "I'd rather regret not having kids than have them and regret it later." Charli went on to explain that she "love[s] the fantasy of having a child" and "naming it sounds so fun." However, when she thinks of parenthood, that sounds like the best part to her, which she takes as a clear sign she shouldn't have kids: "That is exactly a sign to me as to why I should not have one. The fact that that feels like the coolest part about it? Maybe I'm not ready." That is so fair! And if she is never ready, it is totally OK! But rather than leaving it at that, Jason continued to push Charli on the topic! He insisted "all that could change" once she finds the right person, and then dove into a story about his wife, Amanda Anka: "[She] did not want to have kids, so the story goes. And she said once we started going out, she was like, 'OK, I think I can have a kid with this guy.' So you might find somebody." Charli is married, though. She got hitched to The 1975 drummer George Daniel in July 2025. When the artist clarified her relationship status, Jason joked: "I've got to read a newspaper one of these days." She insisted, "That's OK," adding: "I knew immediately where you were going to go and how I was going to respond, so I was looking forward to it." Jason fired back that Charli hadn't "let [him] finish," saying: "Maybe your next husband, you're gonna want to have kids with him." The conversation then awkwardly ends there, and the episode cuts to a commercial. Yeesh. Listen to the chat (below): Jason really should have taken a page out of Sean's book and recognized that this was none of his business. At least know better than to grill her, or any woman, on the topic so hard. Jeez. Fans slammed Jason in the comments, saying: "Who TF does y'all's research, and were they sick/on vacation, is what I wanna know? The girl has a whole song about her feelings on having kids. Two, actually, if you include the remix version." "She should have been on Good Hang with Amy [Poehler] instead of this pod lol" Apparently, according to other fans, not knowing anything about the guest is part of the show's premise. But still, he didn't have to press so hard on this Q, regardless of whether he knew she was married or not. We bet Amy would know better than to ask her about kids! Others took to X (Twitter) to say: "incredible rough listening experience at one point jason bateman asks her how many kids she wants to have (bad enough) and then she's like 'i don't think i want kids' and he's like 'well maybe you just need to find the right guy' and she's like 'i'm married' and then silence" "There are so many different ways to be human. Not everyone needs to be a parent. It's kind of gross how presumptuous he is, trying to tell her how to live her life. I'm wondering if he would broach this subject to a male pop star/actor the same age as her." "btw, if a woman says she doesn't wanna have kids, THEN THATS THE END OF THE STORY. saying 'maybe you'll change your mind when you get married...' is GROSS." "Disrespectfully, we need to bring back journalists to red carpets and as podcast hosts. The lack of research going into questions is a waste of guests' time and a missed opportunity for fans. Have thought this for ages but the jason bateman/charli interaction is particularly wild" "The Charli xcx / Jason Bateman interview was so cringe and embarrassing. I can't believe his people didn't just shelve it or at least cut that part about kids out. It reminds me so much of the awkward dinner scene in The Family Stone with Sarah Jessica Parker." "I LOVE smartless but why why WHY does Jason Bateman ask every young woman if/when they want kids why has no one told him maybe don't do that" It's 2026. If someone says they don't want to have children, leave it and move on. We really don't need the whole "maybe you'll change your mind one day" or "maybe with the right person
