A North Carolina man murdered his girlfriend and told police that he did it when she wouldn't commit to an "exclusive" relationship with him. Stephon Dubose, 32, is facing decades behind prison bars after pleading guilty to the 2023 second-degree murder of his girlfriend, Angela Marina Risi, who was 30. Dubose allegedly strong-armed his way into Risi's Durham home on the morning of October 2, 2023, shooting her to death, Us Weekly confirmed through court records obtained Monday, February 2. Dubose also shot Risi's roommate, leaving her seriously wounded, with injuries she continues recovering from. As part of his plea deal, prosecutors said that Dubose will likely be sentenced to between 35 and 44 years in prison. A sentencing hearing for the killer has not been scheduled yet. N.C. Man Found Guilty After Staging Woman's Murder to Look Like Self Defense Police responded to Risi's residence at around 7 a.m. after neighbors had called 911, saying that they had heard gunfire. Cops arrived to find Risi - who grew up in California - unresponsive from multiple gunshot wounds. Risi's roommate was found soon after, and both women were rushed to the nearest hospital, where she died. Risi's roommate told cops that Dubose was the gunman. Around 30 minutes after finding the shot women, calls came in from a different home about a man stabbing himself. It was Dubose, the court documents claim. Cops managed to disarm Dubose, who was said to be highly emotional. He allegedly admitted to the police he had "shot a female in the face and wasn't going back to prison and couldn't live anymore." Risi's father, Matteo Risi, told WRAL that shortly before his daughter's murder, she and Dubose had been sitting in his car, arguing about their relationship. Matteo said Dubose wanted them to be in an "exclusive relationship," but she wasn't interested, left his car, and headed inside. "He broke in, then chased her to the back of the house ... fired 11 rounds, shot her eight times, with a handgun, 9-millimeter handgun," Matteo told the station. "And then, even more amazing, is he then burst into the bedroom of Angela's roommate and shot her three times. She survived but is permanently disabled." Matteo said his daughter was a "really wonderful person" who was "very bright, very smart, always fun." More than 200 people attended a celebration of life for the murdered woman. North Carolina Cops Make Arrest in Murder of Beloved Science Teacher When she was killed, Angela Risi was a second-year graduate student enrolled in the dance program at Duke University. "She started young with ballet, modern, jazz, and tap dance," her obituary said. "The Duke community joins in their shock and sadness at this tragic loss," the school said in a statement issued soon after her death. Durham City Councilwoman Dedreana Freeman lived next door to the victims and told WTVD the couple had been arguing in the days leading up to the murder. "No one deserves to be killed for differences like that. They had an argument Friday. Things got loud and everybody could hear it. Whatever it was on Monday for you to come back and shoot, shouldn't have happened," she said.
