Colman Domingo fully transformed into Joe Jackson for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic. In a new trailer for Michael released on Monday, February 2, fans are able to learn more about the King of Pop and the impact his father had on his life growing up in the spotlight. "Let me tell you something," Joe (played by Domingo, 56) shares in the sneak peek. "In this life, you're either a winner or you're a loser. Y'all want to work in the steel mill like me for the rest of your days because I sure as hell don't. Y'all willing to fight for it?" While Joe (who died in June 2018 at the age of 89) may have had his focus on the Jackson 5, Michael quickly proved to be the standout musician in the group. Who Is Jaafar Jackson? 5 Things About the Actor Playing Michael Jackson in Biopic "We need to capitalize on Michael's success, because the Jackson family is the brand," Joe says in the trailer. "That's our Coca-Cola. I'm planning an international tour. This is just the beginning." The movie, however, offers a look into Michael's mindset as he navigates fame, fortune and a desire to simply spread love. "You are confident. You are strong. You are beautiful," Michael (played by Jaafar Jackson) says in the clip. "You're the greatest of all time." The positive self-talk, however, may not be enough for Michael to navigate all the pressure to succeed in a difficult industry. "I love my family, but I just want to do my own thing," he says. "I just have all of these ideas in my head. I just got to get them out. I believe music can change the world. Spread love, joy and peace. That is what I want the world to feel." Jaafar, who is a nephew of Michael, will make his feature debut in the film that follows the pop icon as he becomes the most popular artist in music thanks to the success of his Thriller album. (Michael ultimately died in June 2009 at age 50.) While there is plenty of excitement surrounding the film, some of Michael's closest family members have spoken out about the project with some concerns. After Domingo claimed that Paris Jackson was "very helpful" with the movie, Michael's daughter decided to speak out. "@Kingofbingo don't be telling people I was helpful on the set of a movie I had 0% involvement in lol that is so weird," she wrote via her Instagram Story in September 2025. "I read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my thoughts on what was dishonest/didn't sit right with me and when they didn't address it, I moved on with my life. Not my monkeys not my circus. God bless and god speed." Everything to Know About the Upcoming Michael Jackson Biopic: Cast and More Domingo, however, previously shared his intention with the film and explained that the movie aims to "humanize" the Grammy winner. "I think the whole point of this biopic is to really humanize Michael and really show the making of Michael and who he is, and so it deals with a lot of things," Domingo said during an interview with Andy Cohen in 2024. "A lot of things that may even be controversial, you know what I mean? So, it deals with it, and it's got the family love and support, but they didn't get in the way of really telling a compelling story. We really show how this family built themselves, how they relate to each other and to the world and what the world has also created." Michael is in theaters and IMAX on April 24, 2026.
