Schitt's Creek star Noah Reid is remembering the late Catherine O'Hara's legacy after her death at 71. "I'm at a total loss. We all are, clearly," Reid, 38, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, January 31. "Meeting Catherine was surreal, like meeting a painting or a hologram or a saint. Working with Catherine was an elevation, an understanding that there was collaboration in competition, that there were secret ways of knowing and doing that she was willing to share, and that there was humor and magic in everything." He continued, "Knowing Catherine was a gift I still can't believe I got to receive. The coolest, kindest, realest, funniest, most genuine. The best of us. An electrical current of creativity I haven't seen before or since." Us Weekly confirmed on Friday, January 30, that O'Hara died after battling an undisclosed illness. Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire Reacts to Catherine O'Hara's Death at 71 "Prolific multi-award-winning actress, writer and comedian Catherine O'Hara died today at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness," O'Hara's agency, Creative Artists Agency, said in a statement. "A private celebration of life will be held by the family." Among O'Hara's impressive roster of acting credits, she starred as Moira Rose on Schitt's Creek from 2015 to 2020 opposite Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy. The show followed the wealthy Rose family, after they lost all their money and were forced to settle in the fictional town of Schitt's Creek. (The small town was their last remaining asset that hadn't been foreclosed.) Reid, for his part, played Patrick Brewer beginning in season 3. Patrick eventually married Dan's David Rose ahead of the series finale. Schitt's Creek was created by father-son duo Eugene, 79, and Dan, 42 - though O'Hara provided insight into Moira's portrayal. Catherine O'Hara Was Hopeful About 'Schitt's Creek' Revival Before Her Death "I had this lunch with Eugene and Daniel, and I came armed with all these pictures, mainly of Daphne Guinness. She's all black and white, she's very avant-garde," O'Hara, Eugene's longtime collaborator and friend, told Variety in 2020 of her onscreen inspiration. "You could see she is very conscious of the image that she's putting out every day she walks out of her home. Really strong, a lot of it is like armor, the necklaces that she wears, and the heels. It's so not your typical half-hour comedy wife." She continued at the time, "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to have done this with Eugene and Daniel." O'Hara is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons, as well as her extended family. "My heart goes out to Bo and their boys, and to the wonderful O'Hara clan, and to my Schitt's Creek family of so many years," Reid concluded his Saturday tribute. "How lucky we all were. We knew it then, and boy, do we feel it now. Love you, COH." O'Hara and Reid's Schitt's Creek costar Emily Hampshire, who portrayed Stevie, thought Reid summed up the Beetlejuice actress' legacy "perfectly." "I didn't think there were words to describe her and what it was like to work with her, but you just articulated it perfectly," Hampshire, 44, wrote in the comments section.
