A source close to the family told ABC57 in South Bend, Indiana, home of Notre Dame, about Holtz's condition. Holtz led the Fighting Irish to a consensus national championship after an undefeated season in 1988. He coached Notre Dame for 11 seasons from 1986 to 1996. After retiring from coaching and working as an analyst for CBS Sports for two years, Holtz came out of retirement and coached at the University of South Carolina for six seasons from 1999 to 2004.
