New details are being revealed in regards to Catherine O'Hara's sudden death. O'Hara died at her home in Los Angeles "following a brief illness," her agency, Creative Artists Agency, said in a statement to Us Weekly on Friday, January 30. Further details were not immediately available. The development comes shortly after O'Hara's manager confirmed to Us that the Schitt's Creek actress had died at the age of 71. Her most recent work on the small screen came opposite Seth Rogen in the Apple TV+ series The Studio. The show was nominated for several Emmys during the 2025 telecast, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Catherine O'Hara's Life in Pictures: A Look Back at Her Most Iconic Moments O'Hara herself received a nod for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series thanks to her role as Patty Leigh. Although she was in attendance for the Emmys in September 2025, the actress did not attend the 2026 Critics Choice Awards and 2026 Golden Globes earlier this year alongside The Studio cast. O'Hara's career as a Hollywood actress spanned nearly five decades, beginning with the Canadian sketch comedy series Second City Television, for which she earned her first Emmy. She went on to star in films such as Beetlejuice and the first two Home Alone movies, in which she played the mother of Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin. Instead, she attributed her success to working with talented collaborators, being raised by funny parents and always looking for the humor in things. "There's no better survival instinct," she told the publication. "You're so lucky if you're raised with it. It's one of God's greatest gifts, because life is full of the dark and the light. You gotta look for the light. My parents were both really funny, and a sense of humor was always appreciated. Laughing and being funny was highly encouraged at our table." Away from the spotlight, O'Hara enjoyed spending time with her family, including husband Bo Welch. After meeting on the set of Beetlejuice in 1987 - with help from director Tim Burton - the pair got married in April 1992. "I was in Beetlejuice, and the production designer, Bo Welch, was very attractive, and he finally asked me out," she told The New Yorker in 2019. "We went on location at the end of the movie, and we started dating. I moved to L.A. to be with him. Yeah, I moved for love." During their marriage, O'Hara and Welch welcomed their first son, Matthew, in 1994 and their second son, Luke, in 1997. 'Home Alone' Cast: Where Are They Now? Macaulay Culkin, Catherine O'Hara "They're very funny, and we encourage it," O'Hara told the Toronto Star in 2007 about her sons. "The older one does Warners cartoon bits, really old-fashioned, cheap-ass funny vaudeville stuff. And the little one does word play." As for what kept her marriage strong, O'Hara said it all came back to laughs. "People always say, 'Communicate,' right? 'Tell them how you're feeling.' We do a lot of it with jokes," she told People in 2024. "We'll make fun of each other instead of yelling at each other. Sarcasm helps!"
