Holy F**K! In an "unprecedented" move, independent journalist Don Lemon has been arrested! On Friday, the former CNN anchor's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, revealed Don "was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy awards." The Grammys are this Sunday, FYI. The arrest comes after he was reporting at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, on January 18, where an anti-ICE protest interrupted a religious service. Don has insisted he was not demonstrating, but was there as a journalist. You can see his coverage at the church HERE. Nevertheless, prosecutors have accused him of violating federal law that protects people's right to participate in services at houses of worship, per the New York Times. Federal agents initially tried to charge eight people in connection with the protest, including Lemon, but a magistrate judge only approved charges against three people - not including Don. The judge felt the evidence against Don was insufficient. The Justice Department appealed it, and the request for an arrest warrant was denied. And despite this, he was still arrested! Three others were also taken into custody, including independent journalist Georgia Fort, who was filming the protest. In a Facebook Live on Friday morning, she said: "This is all stemming from the fact that I filmed a protest as a member of the media. ... We are supposed to have our constitutional right of the freedom to film, to be a member of the press. I don't feel like I have my First Amendment right as a member of the press because now federal agents are at my door arresting me for filming the church protest a few weeks ago." CNN claimed Don was taken into custody in a hotel lobby in Beverly Hills after 11 p.m. while he was leaving for an event. CBS News reported Don is expected to face a grand jury in connection to his arrest. A source told the outlet that he faces charges of "conspiracy to deprive others of their civil rights and violation of the FACE Act by allegedly interfering by force with the exercise of others' First Amendment rights." WHAT?! How does that even make sense? It is highly unusual for the DOJ to bring criminal charges against a reporter, and it marks a STARTLING trajectory towards full authoritarianism on Trump's part. Very scary stuff. The reporter's attorney insisted he's ready to fight the charges: "The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable. There is no more important time for people like Don to be doing this work. Instead of investigating the federal agents who killed two peaceful Minnesota protesters, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention and resources to this arrest, and that is the real indictment of wrongdoing in this case. This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand. Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court."
