A man in Hillsborough, New Jersey, was shot by police who were arresting him for fatally beating his parents, Us Weekly confirmed. Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald said that Patrick J. Lin was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree attempted murder and two counts of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose on Friday, January 16, according to a news release. The double murders were discovered when Hillsborough Township Police officers responded to a home on Cornell Trail around 4 p.m. on September 25, 2025, after being asked to perform a wellness check. Officers were initially unable to contact the residents, and they did not gain access into the home until 6:30 p.m. Once they were able to get inside, officers came face to face with Lin on the second floor and quickly noticed that he was armed with a knife. Pennsylvania Man Allegedly Killed Parents, Sister With 'Psycho Type' Knife McDonald said that two Hillsborough Township police officers responded by firing their duty weapons and Lin was hit by their bullets. After he was shot, officers immediately started to perform life-saving measures on Lin. He was then taken to an area trauma center, where he was listed in critical condition. As authorities searched the home, Lin's parents, David Lin and Jean Lin, were found dead in two separate bedrooms on the second floor. The cause of death for both David and Jean, who were both 69, was blunt force injuries to the head, according to authorities. Meanwhile, the manner of death was ruled as a homicide. Authorities also allegedly found a notebook inside Lin's bedroom that included a wish list, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NJ Patch. One item on the list said he wished "to kill someone and get away with it," per the outlet. Nearly four months after the murders took place, Lin was served with a criminal complaint while receiving treatment at a local hospital on January 16. He is currently in stable condition and is being guarded by the Somerset County Sheriff's Office as he remains under the facility's care. When Lin is finally discharged from the hospital, he will be transferred to Somerset County Jail. He will then be scheduled to attend a court hearing regarding the charges. It is not currently clear if he has retained legal representation or entered a plea. The Hillsborough Township Police Department did not share any updates when contacted by Us Weekly.
