[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content] Two weeks after a Long Island teenager vanished after heading into New York City, police have released new information that sheds heartbreaking light on where he was last seen. Thomas Medlin was just 15 years old when he disappeared abruptly back on January 9. As we've reported, he's just a kid from St. James, a quiet Suffolk County hamlet, who left school like any other day and never made it home. According to police, Thomas left Stony Brook School around 3:30 p.m. that day and ran to the nearby Long Island Rail Road station, where investigators say he caught a train into Manhattan. Surveillance later placed him at Grand Central Station roughly two hours after that. Then, the trail went cold. Until now. Detectives say Thomas was last seen at 7:06 p.m. on the 9th, walking along the pedestrian walkway of the Manhattan Bridge. That bridge stretches from Lower Manhattan into Downtown Brooklyn, suspended over the East River. It's a haunting image to imagine a 15-year-old alone there at night. What came next is even harder to process: "The last activity on his cell phone was on January 9 at 7:09 p.m. and a nearby surveillance camera captured a splash in the water on January 9 at 7:10 p.m. [Medlin] was never seen leaving the bridge via path exits." Oh, no. Police have not announced any further news that Thomas has been found, or his fate was in any way confirmed. And, there was no mention of any recovery. Just those details, sitting there, unresolved for now. That possibility understandably alarmed parents everywhere. But now, investigators say that angle has not panned out: "Under the issuance of subpoenas and search warrants, an examination so far of multiple social media / online gaming profiles and forensic examination of electronic devices associated with Medlin was conducted. This examination has determined these platforms are not connected to his disappearance." Police also stated there is no evidence pointing to foul play: "There is no indication of criminal activity." Still, for Thomas' loved ones, the absence of criminal activity does not bring comfort. To that end, authorities say they have remained in close contact with the family as the investigation continues: "Detectives have continuously communicated the department's findings to Medlin's family. The department is continuing to work with its law enforcement partners to bring closure to the family." Closure. That word feels so small compared to the enormity of what this family is facing.
