John Mulaney is opening up about the very specific role he plays within Olivia Munn's extended family. "So Olivia has a large - she's Vietnamese and she has a large Vietnamese family in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, of which I am one of the significant financial contributors," Mulaney, 43, said during the Monday, January 26, episode of comedian Mike Birbiglia's "Working It Out" podcast. "For the first 39 years of my life, I supported I think zero Vietnamese people. Probably none. And now I have 10 on the books, a couple take Zelle." Mulaney joked that he never has to "wonder" whether Munn's family members want him to send them money. "How refreshing, by the way, to be in a goddamn white family and never talk about money at all?" he continued. "[Olivia's relatives] go, 'How much money do you have?' I tell them, they love it. They couldn't like it more." "You have parents with some success, you can't really do anything for them," he said. "It brings me great joy to help out and do fun things with Olivia's family." Birbiglia, 47, added that it's a "riot" whenever Mulaney talks about his in-laws on stage during his shows. "I take them to the store - her aunts and uncles, mom - that only a couple days later, somebody says, 'Oh, what did you do Monday?' I say, 'I took six of her relatives to CVS to get child flip-flips for themselves. And then they wore them to a restaurant.' And then I'll go, 'Oh well, that's out of the ordinary a little from my life.'" Birbiglia also pointed out that Mulaney warns his audiences that he's "gonna do the voice" when joking about Munn's family. "I've earned it," Mulaney quipped. Mulaney was previously married to ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler from 2014 to 2022. The former couple announced their split in 2021, shortly after Mulaney finished a rehab stint for alcoholism and drug addiction. (He voluntarily checked into a 60-day treatment program in late 2020 following a relapse.) As news broke of Mulaney's split from Tendler, 40, Us Weekly confirmed his relationship with Munn, 45, who later revealed that she and Mulaney were expecting their first baby. Later that year, the couple welcomed their second baby, daughter Méi, via surrogate. During a 2024 interview with GQ, Munn admitted that she "barely knew" Mulaney before she got pregnant with Malcolm, but she remembered him being excited about becoming a dad. "It wasn't necessarily, 'We're going to be married and live together' or any of that, but it was, 'I will be involved in some way,'" she recalled. At first, the pair navigated long distance, with Munn in Los Angeles and Mulaney in New York. After initially picturing themselves as coparents, they ultimately decided to try raising their family as a couple. In the same interview, Munn reflected on Mulaney's close bond with her relatives. "John has seamlessly fit in with my mom and aunts in a way that I have never been able to," she told GQ. "They love the same movies. They love the same Vietnamese gossip." Mulaney added at the time, "Every day I can be like, 'Have you talked to Phung today? Have you talked to Hoan? What's going on with her cataracts?' It's my own reality show. A series that never ends."
