by Stephanie SoteriouBuzzFeedBuzzFeed Staff On Monday, Billie Eilish took to her Instagram page to call out the celebrities who are not speaking up as she passionately condemned the horror that is unfolding across America at the moment. His death came just three weeks after Renée Nicole Good, another 37-year-old resident of the city, was killed by an ICE agent in her vehicle. Billie also shared posts criticizing people who claim not to "do politics." Instagram @billieeilish / Via Instagram: @billieeilish Perhaps surprisingly, this post was met with resistance, with Billie being accused of "performative activism." Quote-tweeting Pop Base's tweet about Billie's post, one person wrote: "She suffers from Gen Z's must-look-morally-upright-than-others syndrome." Paras Griffin / Getty Images "is her activism limited to only shading celebrities and posting Instagram stories? Or is she actually going to do something useful?" somebody else asked, while another wrote: "When I'm in a performative activism competition and my opponent is Billie eilish." Kevin Winter / Getty Images Others claimed that the idea that celebrities should platform important issues is "a specific American way of thinking," with one tweet reading: "Why does America need celebrities to tell them what to feel? It's getting weird." Jon Kopaloff / Getty Images However, others were quick to hit back - arguing that people who have a large audience who could be influenced by their opinion have a responsibility to use their platform when it comes to important issues. One person pointed out: "a 'performative' celebrity who speaks up is still better than a celebrity who stays silent btw!" Johnny Nunez / Getty Images And soon, it was theorized that those criticizing Billie were doing so because their fave had, in fact, remained silent. One person wrote: "Yall trying to cancel her while she's doing this when your favs can't even speak up." Gilbert Flores / Getty Images Another incredibly viral tweet reads: "here come certain fanbases calling her performative because that's the only way they can justify their own favorite artists silence and complacency," which seemingly struck a chord with Billie's brother, Finneas, who shared it to his Instagram story - with many interpreting it as shade at other celebs. Instagram @finneas / Instagram @billieeilish / Via Instagram: @https://www.instagram.com/finneas/?hl=en Still, Finneas has been widely praised for leaping to his sister's defense, with one person saying on a Reddit forum: "Finneas is constantly posting about politics; it's so clear he actually cares. Anyone who tries to accuse him of being a performative activist clearly only reads his posts that make it to the headlines." To which somebody else replied: "He also really cares about his sister and is always in her corner. It's very sweet. Sometimes he kind of feeds the trolls, but I can't fault him for being human and reacting to the shit people say about/to Billie online." Kevin Mazur / Getty Images "ATP who cares if is performative. Is something not better than nothing?" another asked, while one more echoed: "He's not wrong though. We can't call everything performative and the be mad when no one speaks up." Variety / Getty Images And somebody else commented: "Honestly? Even if it WAS performative, I wouldn't care, because regardless she is using her MASSIVE platform and influence to raise awareness about the situation and that may lead to her fans wanting to help and educating themselves on what's happening. Lack of knowledge/education and a lack of interest on politics is something that has contributed to where we are now." Sarah Morris / Getty Images Others pointed out that Finneas and Billie often do more than post to social media, and have regularly attended protests for various causes in their home city of Los Angeles.
