The trailer out on Friday (below) confirms that tragedy awaits Kayce, who is the fan-favorite son of Kevin Costner's late John Dutton from the flagship series. Yellowstone proper had given Kayce a happy ending after he sold the family's Montana ranch and planned to stake out a new beginning with his own family, wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill). But the first minutes of the trailer show that Kayce is now sleeping alone in his bed, has suffered a loss and is seen visiting a grave. The tragic turn of events hits hard after Kayce's Yellowstone sendoff. "Yellowstone is gone, same for most of my family," Kayce says at one point in the trailer. "As for vengeance, the day is still young." The trailer reveals that Kayce deals with his demons by jumping back into work with the U.S. Marshals. Here's the official logline: "With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates - Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) - must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation." Grimes previously spoke to THR about being hesitant to revive Kayce after his perfect Yellowstone ending, until the right idea was presented to him. "He has his dream life now, so now what does he do? I think we left him in a perfect place," he said, "and then the new showrunner, Spencer [Hudnut], called and he had an idea that was very, very good. And that was it. I was like, 'Ok, that makes sense. And that opens up a whole new world for him and we get to see him be a different Kayce than we've ever seen.'" Hudnut is showrunner on Marshals and executive producing with Yellowstone-verse hitmaker Taylor Sheridan, along with John Linson, Art Linson, Grimes, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari. The show, which is one of several Yellowstone spinoffs, comes from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios. Marshals, which has been renamed from Y: Marshals, premieres Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
