The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly hired Eric Bieniemy to replace Matt Nagy as the team's offensive coordinator, and starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes has weighed in on the move. Mahomes, 30, shared a photo of himself standing next to Bieniemy, 56, on the field during the coach's first run with the Chiefs. He added three flexed biceps emojis to the post, which he shared via his Instagram Story on Thursday, January 22. Bieniemy first joined the Chiefs' coaching staff in 2013, serving as running backs coach until 2017, when he was promoted to offensive coordinator. He left in February 2023 to take the same position with the Washington Commanders. Mahomes, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear on December 14, is working to be ready for Week 1 in 2026. Before the Chiefs had even made their decision, he weighed in on what he wants to see in the next OC. Patrick Mahomes Makes Major Announcement About His Football Future Post-Surgery "I just want someone that loves football, that cares about football, wants to give everything they can to win, to hold people accountable, and then to bring new ideas every single day," Mahomes told reporters via Zoom interview on January 15. He continued, "That's something that we have to continue to do if you want to continue to be great in this league, is you have to continue to evolve and get better and better and that's something that we'll try to do here and I want to get back to that winning culture of being accountable to each other and going out there and playing great football every single day, practice or game." Mahomes' teammate, Travis Kelce, also spoke glowingly of Bieniemy. Kelce, 36, still hasn't decided whether he will return to the Chiefs next year, but if he does, he will play for one of his "favorite coaches of all-time." "I've had so many unbelievable growing moments under him as a player, as a person, and I just love the guy," Kelce said on the Wednesday, January 21 episode of his "New Heights" podcast. "It's going to be awesome to see him back in the building and to see him back wearing the Chiefs logo, baby." Travis Kelce Breaks Silence on Heated Exchanges With Chiefs Coach Andy Reid The Chiefs are coming off a disappointing season in which they went 6-11, missing the playoffs after playing in five of the last six Super Bowls. But head coach Andy Reid told reporters that he doesn't believe the offense needs a complete overhaul. "You're still looking at an offense that was one of the top-10 offenses in the league, if you take everything into consideration there. So you're not that far off," Reid, 67, said in his end-of-season press conference. "You've got to get a couple things bouncing your way and make sure you take care of that." Mahomes, for his part, pointed to a lack of consistency as a reason for the lackluster season. "I think offensively, we weren't consistent enough throughout games," he said. "We had stretches in games where we played good. We had stretches in the season where we played really good. But we've got to be better, and that starts with me, and then it has to feed throughout the entire offense."
