The umbrella term that originated online has spread into every corner and industry across the globe, becoming a catch-all term for any online content creator and diluting its original meaning in the process. In order to be an influencer, you have to hold actual influence; people have to watch your content and follow your work en masse, giving you the kind of uniquely authoritative role that comes with such an audience.
