This year marks the first time that the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences will present an honor for best casting, with the inaugural nominees as Nina Gold (Hamnet), Jennifer Venditti (Marty Supreme), Cassandra Kulukundis (One Battle After Another), Gabriel Domingues (The Secret Agent) and Francine Maisler (Sinners). The new award - which was announced with plenty of warning in 2024 - is the first new Oscar to be introduced since the Academy began presenting best animated feature in 2002, now upping the total number of categories to 24. It's a long awaited recognition of the casting process, after momentum began when the Academy created a new branch for casting directors in 2013. (And there's another shake-up on the horizon, with a stunt design Oscar set to be presented for the first time in 2028).
