The four surviving members of One Direction are ringing in 2026 with new music - all within the same week. Simon Cowell famously formed 1D on The X Factor UK in 2010, bringing together Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne to front a boy band. The group, however, fractured in 2015 when Malik left the group to pursue a solo career. The rest of the boys announced an indefinite hiatus the next year. Nearly a decade later, Payne tragically died after suffering a fatal fall in Argentina at the age of 31. Styles, Horan, Malik and Tomlinson publicly reunited for the first time at Payne's funeral service in November 2024. "[Liam's death] was a wake-up call for all of them. Prior, they kept in touch sporadically but didn't have close friendships at all," a source exclusively told Us Weekly in December 2024. The foursome all presumably channeled their grief into art, releasing multiple solo works. "There might be one or two people from a band that prosper, but history says there's not normally more than two," Tomlinson told Billboard in a January 2026 cover story. "I always knew Harry was going to go on to do what he's done. I'm sure he's superseded his own expectations in the way that he's taken over the world, but we knew he's got everything it takes to be a great artist. And Niall, I had a good feeling about too - he's Irish, he's lovely, everyone loves him." The record's first singles, "Lemonade" and "Imposter," dropped earlier in the month. "Let me take this moment to say thank you to every single person that has supported me over the years. You are throughout this record and everything I do," Tomlinson tweeted on January 20. "This album would never have sounded the way it does without all the power and confidence you lot have given me. Thank you, thank you, thank you! How did I get here?" After Styles announced his new single would be dropping the same day as Tomlinson's album, some fans wondered whether another one of Tomlinson's tweets was directed at his former bandmate. "Going to need your help over the next few days to cut through the noise. Time to give this record the moment it deserves!" Tomlinson wrote via X shortly after Styles announced "Aperture." "I've been in the studio a little bit," Malik told the crowd, per Variety. "I got a new record coming for you guys pretty soon. I'm really excited about that. 'Drive Safe' with my pal Myles Smith is coming soon," Horan wrote in the latest issue of his newsletter. "Been a big fan of his for a while now and I'm so happy I got to work with him on this tuuuuuuuneeeee! Can't wait for you all to hear it." Horan did not reveal specifics of when "Drive Safe" will be released.
