If you're just like Us, then you probably can't stop thinking about Michael Rapaport's rather unique eating habits on The Traitors. "I cannot defend the shoveling technique," Rapaport, 55, told Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, January 20, after a clip of him placing his mouth directly on the edge of his plate and scooping heaping spoonfuls of food into his mouth went viral after episode 5. "I do the shoveling technique when I am alone. I do the shoveling technique at times when my wife is not looking, but when I am in public, I do not do the shoveling technique." Rapaport declared he "will not defend, explain or make excuses for my now-iconic shoveling technique, which I never, ever, ever, in a million years, would've thought people would've been so fascinated by the way that I eat my food." The actor reiterated he had "no excuse" for eating that way and claimed he was the only person in the room when the "shoveling" took place. All Rules and Behind-the-Scenes Secrets You Didn't Know About 'The Traitors' "I was in that room alone," he told the outlet. "There's plenty of other times when I was eating, and I was not doing my shoveling technique. But because I was in that room alone, I was shoveling the food into my mouth at a rapid pace because I wanted to go out there and catch Traitors." Many social media users reposted the clip, weighing in on the unusual scene. "The way Michael Rapaport eats on #TheTraitors has lived rent free in my head for days," one person wrote via X, while another said, "Why does Michael Rapaport eat every meal like it's last one before being sent to the electric chair. He too damn grown for this #TheTraitorsUS." His eating style wasn't the only controversial thing Rapaport did during his short but memorable time on the Peacock competition series. The podcast host came under fire after a tense roundtable where Rapaport accused costar Colton Underwood of being a Traitor, saying, "Nobody in this room would be better at holding a secret than you." The cast took it as a dig at Underwood's sexuality. (Former Bachelor Underwood, 33, came out as gay in April 2021 on Good Morning America, saying he "ran from [himself] for a long time" before embracing his sexuality.) "You think it was fun for 29 years of my life?" Underwood asked Rapaport, who denied he was making a dig at Underwood's sexuality, saying, "That has nothing to do with it. I think you came into this game loving the idea of being a Traitor." Cindy Ord/Getty Images for SiriusXM As the cast members chimed in, telling Rapaport his comments were offensive, he doubled down in defense, claiming, "I'm not talking about closets! His behavior is of a Traitor. His behavior is secretive, it's conniving, it's chirping, it's commiserating, it's cowardly." Elsewhere, Rapaport exclaimed, "This man is responsible for chirping in everybody's ear. And this man - after the challenge today - was openly in my face questioning me and then when I walked away, he said my name out loud to a group of people. [He was] holding court and this man should be keeping his mouth shut. Because last night, this man organized and colluded to get rid of a good Faithful." The damage was already done, though, as Rapaport was voted to be banished from the game. He revealed he has since apologized to Underwood following his dramatic exit from the castle. "As soon as production ended, I DM'd him. And we FaceTimed, and I told him what I meant," Rapaport told Parade on Tuesday. "We had a very private, grown man conversation that wasn't tenuous, that wasn't dramatic. We laughed, we talked. He shared some things about the rest of that night, and we moved on. He was very cool, very, very respectful, very understanding. And he actually also reached out to me the day after that episode aired. He touched base with me, which I told him I really appreciated. And there's no beef. There's no more than what it was. It happened, and I regret it."
