Newly released 911 audio reportedly reveals that EMS was called to the University of Kansas' Allen Fieldhouse on Monday, January 19, the same day Jayhawks head men's basketball coach Bill Self was briefly hospitalized. In a since-deleted post via X, Tejay Cleland of KWCH-12 released audio of a 911 call that came in around 4 p.m. local time on Monday. "Unit in route. Chest pain at Allen Fieldhouse," a voice says in the recording. The Jayhawks are currently in Boulder, Colorado, where they will face the Colorado Buffaloes on Tuesday, January 20. Self, 63, did not travel with the team. Kansas City Chiefs Stop Practice After Player Suffers Seizure: Report "Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self felt under the weather earlier today and, out of an abundance of caution, was taken to LMH Health where he received IV fluids," the university wrote in a statement Monday. "He is feeling better but did not accompany the team to Boulder." Self, who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017, has endured a series of health scares over the years. In 2023, he missed the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments after being hospitalized for chest tightness and balance concerns. He underwent heart catheterization surgery and had two stents placed to treat blocked arteries. The two-time championship head coach said at the time that the ordeal reaffirmed his love for coaching. "The one thing I can tell you without question? I miss my job," Self said in an April 2023 press conference. "I love my job and I want to do my job for a long time. That's what is positive." Chiefs' BJ Thompson Released From Hospital Days After Medical Emergency Self continued, "I think I have to wake up a little bit and maybe do some things from a lifestyle standpoint, a personal habit standpoint that I've been very, very, very inconsistent with my entire adult life. ... I'm taking (the doctor's advice) serious for the first time that I probably have in my life. All this did, from a job standpoint, was reconfirm how much I love doing what I do." Self underwent an additional heart procedure in July 2025 after experiencing "concerning symptoms" during a summer practice. He told the media in October that his recent medical concerns have caused him to change his habits. "I would say I've had a couple of wake-up calls but this was probably a bigger knot on my head than even the first one," he said. "But, the way that it's probably changed, as much as anything, is I've never been one of healthy habits so to speak. But I've gotten a lot better. I haven't had any fried food or fast food or red meat or yellow cheese or anything in three months almost." Self took over as Kansas head coach in 2003, replacing the legendary Roy Williams. Beginning in his second season, Self's Jayhawks finished with at least a share of the Big 12 regular season championship in 14 consecutive seasons, winning the 2008 National Championship and reaching two additional Final Fours along the way. Kansas also won the 2022 national title, cementing Self's status as one of the all-time great head coaches. This season, the Jayhawks are 13-5, but have seemingly turned their season around with three wins in their last four games, thanks to a brilliant stretch from freshman phenom Darryn Peterson. Kansas has not announced when Self will return to the sideline.
