Daniel Naroditsky's cause of death has been released. In case you're not up to date, the chess community lost one of their favorite grandmasters late last year, when the 29-year-old tragically and suddenly passed away in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. His friend and fellow chess player Oleksandr Bortnyk was sadly the one who found him deceased after not hearing from him for a few days back in October. Now, according to a medical examiner's report obtained by The Post, we know that he passed from drug poisoning. Per the documents, Daniel had ingested methamphetamine AND amphetamine, along with mitragynine - which is the opioid-like substance that's the active ingredient in kratom. Previously, the police said they were investigating this as a possible suicide. No foul play is suspected. So, so sad. That's just where his career started, though. By the time he reached age 17, he had already earned the title of grandmaster, and went on to study at Stanford University before completing his studies and devoting himself to chess full time. He was well beloved on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, where he'd often go live and give commentary on big league chess matches. He also taught students how to play at Charlotte Chess Center. Not only that, he was a pro commentator for Chess.com, and even wrote a chess column for The New York Times. Prior to his shocking death, former world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik had lodged claims of unproven cheating against Daniel. It got so bad, fans called Vladimir out for what they saw as bullying. Even the international governing body of chess, The International Chess Federation, filed a complaint against Vladimir, accusing him of harassment and "the insulting of an individual's dignity." During Daniel's final livestream, he mentioned how much the accusations had taken a toll on him, saying: "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I start doing well, people assume the worst of intentions. The issue is just the lingering effect of it." Daniel will be deeply missed by the chess world, who knew him as a "talented chess player, commentator, and educator, and a cherished member of the chess member community". Such a heartbreaking case.
