Does he smell?'"by Leyla MohammedBuzzFeed StaffFacebookPinterestLink Believe it or not, it's almost been 5 years since the Great Celebrity Bathing Debate, which saw a host of celebs publicly discussing their hygiene habits after Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis sparked a worldwide conversation about the subject. Taylor Hill / Getty Images During an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Ashton and Mila - who got married in 2015, and share three children - candidly said that they don't believe in washing their kids unless they can "see dirt on them." Steve Granitz / Getty Images After host Dax theorized that you "should not be getting rid of the natural oil on your skin with a bar of soap every day," Ashton agreed and said of his kids, "If you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there's no point." Kimberly White / Getty Images As for themselves, Ashton later stated that he washes his "armpits and crotch daily and nothing else ever," while Mila went on to note that she "didn't shower much anyway" throughout her childhood, having grown up without the luxury of hot water. Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images The couple's comments sparked a huge frenzy, with Ashton eventually poking fun at all the backlash by sharing a clip of him and Mila during bathtime with their kids. Weeks later, Mila defended herself and Ashton during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, during which she called the subsequent Celebrity Bathing Debate "so dumb." Cole Burston / Getty Images "It was on [Dax Shepard's] podcast, and we were doing press ... Somehow the conversation derailed into bathing habits, and then we started talking about how we all don't bathe our children very often, and/or ourselves. Like, I shower every day, but I don't wash my hair every day. I don't find that to be a necessity," she said.
She later added, "The kids, there's a body of water that they touch, just about every day. Almost every day. Sometimes it's a pool, sometimes it's a sprinkler...
It just depends. It's COVID. It was like, who showers? We don't leave the house. Who cares?" Well, fast forward to now, and Ashton is discussing the subject once again. Ernesto Ruscio / Getty Images "It was the craziest thing of all time," he said of the debate and backlash during a new interview with People. "We made a comment at one point, and people were like, 'Does he stink? Does he smell?'" Jeff Kravitz / Getty Images Ashton then clarified that he does, in fact, shower. "People are like, 'They don't shower.' I'm like, 'I shower, I go to the gym, I shower,'" he said. Anadolu / Getty Images Elsewhere in the interview, Ashton opened up about undergoing a huge physical transformation for his upcoming role in FX/Hulu's The Beauty. Bellocqimages / Getty Images While Ashton has appeared in a handful of projects in recent years, he has notably kept a low profile - namely since he and Mila faced heavy backlash for writing letters in support of Danny Masterson in 2023. You can read more about that, and Danny's prison sentence, right here. "I've been sitting in an office chair doing venture capital. And so, I was like, 'Oh, my gosh. What am I gonna do?' So I got a trainer - his name is Robbie Egan - and Robbie comes to my house at five o'clock in the morning before I start work and beats me up," he said. FX Network / Via youtu.be "I got in shape. I got a haircut, which I hadn't in a while. I was like, 'Alright, I gotta clean this thing up.' And then I showed up to work," he continued. "Luckily, we started shooting Jan. 20 last year, and I always do dry January, so I had 20 days of not drinking before, and I started to really tighten up."
