Axelle / Getty Images Jameela - an actor and activist known for advocating body positivity, LGBTQ+ rights, and broader social justice issues - shared her take this past week at the Golden Week Nominees Night hosted by the Hollywood Reporter and Spotify. Mike Marsland / Getty Images Comparing her outspokenness to quieter celebrities, Jameela told Refinery29, "Am I brave or are they cowards? I think they're being greedy and weird and disappointing." David Dee Delgado / Getty Images She added that, as public figures, they have a responsibility to use their platforms. "Look at the billions of eyeballs on all of us collectively. There should be no outliers of the industry who are the outspoken ones, like Mark Ruffalo," she said of the Marvel star, who's been vocal on topics like Donald Trump and the Israel-Hamas War, "[who are] out there on their own with this amount of privilege." Alberto E. Rodriguez / Getty Images Jameela continued, "I feel like we weaponize the word brave to make it seem as though someone's on this pedestal. Using the word 'brave' is a way of separating yourself - being like, 'Oh, I could never do what you do.' And 'You make it seem like it's so hard and so inaccessible.' And then we rely on individuals to do what would be so much easier to achieve as a collective." Ramsey Cardy / Getty Images She concluded, "I hope it changes." Kayla Oaddams / Getty Images Jameela's comments quickly went viral as people praised her honesty. "We love an articulate honest critical thinking queen," one person wrote. Another simply said, "This!!!!" Taylor Hill / Getty Images "She ate with that first statement," a third person said. "'Am I brave or are they cowards?' Apply that to ANYTHING!" Samir Hussein / Getty Images Others said her comments genuinely changed how they think. "I hadn't thought of it that way," one commenter wrote. "It makes sense though. We have been programmed to think it's hard & dangerous to speak. Thank you @jameelajamil for the wake up call." Rodin Eckenroth / Getty Images People also praised her "outstanding" take on Reddit, with one person calling it "100% FACTS." Kate Green / Getty Images "Perfect take!" another said. "It is not 'brave' to stand up for basic human rights, it is merely being human. On the other hand, refusing to stand up for basic human rights is being selfish, greedy, immoral, and outright evil." They added, "I'm loving Jameela more and more each day." Leon Bennett / Getty Images Someone else said, "'Greedy, weird and disappointing' is SUCH a burn." Vittorio Zunino Celotto / Getty Images "She's totally right," another commenter said, adding that they think "the majority are not speaking out because they agree with what's happening not because they're not brave." While someone else repeated, "She is brave and they are cowards." LMK your thoughts on Jameela's take in the comments.
